We sincerely hope you are being able to enjoy this incredible weather. Walking down the street this week, it’s been wonderful to see people smiling, luxuriating and radiating *good mood* vibes. So, what’s news?
Before anything else, you need to read or listen to this DCist story by Jacob Fenston on creating mosquito traps. We must prepare! Summer. Is. Coming. (The audio is especially adorable FYI.)
Metro saw some unwanted activity over this past week. On Thursday, shots were fired at Potomac Avenue Metro station (WJLA-7). The DC Guardian Angels patrolled the station on Friday night, after receiving many requests to do so (WUSA-9). And on Monday, a man was found dead along the tracks close to Judiciary Square Metro station, snaring commuters’ mornings along the red line for a few hours between Gallery Place and NoMA-Gallaudet stations (FOX-5). It appears the man made contact with the electrified rail and was subsequently struck by an oncoming train (Metro PD).
Metro Police would like your help in identifying the person who fired the shots on Thursday:
The person who stabbed a Rand Paul (R-KY) staffer has been arrested. (CNN)
Christy Bautista was stabbed to death on Friday evening by a man who was already on the run for an armed robbery. She was staying at the Ivy City Hotel because she was in town for a concert. (Washington Times)
Orlando Galloway was killed on Sunday evening in the 200 block of 14th Street SE, inside his apartment. An arrest has already been made and no motive has been given thus far. (Washington Post)
A particularly shocking carjacking in Navy Yard on Friday was captured on video and shared by WUSA-9 on their YouTube channel. There are cops on foot and at least two patrol cars in the area, but there is no stopping the carjacker, who awkwardly maneuvers the Jeep into several parked cars. (Guess no “good guys with guns” were available, which is fine by us and would have probably ended up in innocent lives harmed.)
Charles Allen was a guest on Friday’s Politics Hour show on WAMU and he chatted with Kojo Nnamdi and Tom Sherwood about his congressional hearing experiences, as well as the Revised Criminal Code and other issues. We’ve always been impressed by how deftly Allen handles diverse topics and pointed questions, and we think you’ll be impressed too– except for some of his more ardent detractors, perhaps.
Hey, in case you were under a rock or stuck in some sort of maximum security bunker all of yesterday, you may have missed some interesting news coming out of New York City. Seems an ex-President was accused of 34 or so crimes. We highly recommend this series of live updates from New York Magazine.
And just for posterity’s sake, we’d like to remind you that Trump once enjoyed a Forbes magazine from, uh, cover to cover. (Mother Jones)
A tiny renovated carriage house off 11th Street SE (two bedroom, two bath) sold for over $1M after just five days on the market and Urban Turf has additional details.
It’s baby fox season, so try to give these adorable animals a little space as you go about your walks (Washingtonian). And remember: they can be rabid, as was the case last year, when a mama fox went on a protective rampage before being put down. (USA Today).
Finally, if you haven’t gotten down to the MLK, Jr. branch of the DC Public Library to see the We Who Believe in Freedom: Black Feminist exhibit, please do. The exhibit opened last week with a star-studded gala at the Hamilton (Washington Informer). Catch a little preview on our Instagram feed.
