Election 2020:

ANC Candidate Statements: Michael Eichler, ANC 6E01

It’s 22 days until election day and most of you have probably made up your minds about whom you will vote in the general election. However, when it comes to local elections, most people have no idea how their District, Ward or advisory neighborhood commissions are divided or affect them. Local outlets such as Greater Greater Washington do a good job of bringing hyperlocal politics news, and reasons why you should run for these nonpartisan offices. OpenANC allows you to learn more about your own single-member district, so you know the names of the people in the race. As is now a tradition, The Hill is Home is publishing candidate statements in the order in which we’ve received them, so you know a little more about the people running and don’t go into the voting booth (or mail-in ballot) blind. –Maria Helena Carey

I’m Michael Eichler, long-time DC resident but relatively new to Shaw.  I’m excited to be running for Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner for SMD 6E01. I came to DC in 1991 for undergrad at GW and have lived here since then, except for a short stint in the Bay Area for grad school between 2003 and 2006. I’ve lived in Foggy Bottom, Mt. Pleasant, Adams Morgan, H Street/Atlas District, and now Shaw.  I am an engineer and urban planner, and I’ve worked in DC-regional transportation planning and policy for the past 14 years.
I am a life-long environmentalist, and stewardship of our fragile planet is the prime driving factor in my life and motivation for my career in public transportation and urban planning, and my interest in public service by running for ANC. As an engineer, I am a strong advocate for data-driven, fact-based decision making. And as a practitioner of empathy, I believe we can find innovative solutions to complex problems where everyone wins.  We can and we must.
