It’s 55 days until election day and most of you have probably made up your minds about whom you will vote in the general election. However, when it comes to local elections, most people have no idea how their District, Ward or advisory neighborhood commissions are divided or affect them. Local outlets such as Greater Greater Washington do a good job of bringing hyperlocal politics news, and reasons why you should run for these nonpartisan offices. OpenANC allows you to learn more about your own single-member district, so you know the names of the people in the race. As is now a tradition, The Hill is Home is publishing candidate statements in the order in which we’ve received them, so you know a little more about the people running and don’t go into the voting booth (or mail-in ballot) blind. –Maria Helena Carey
Statement by Peter Writght, ANC 6B08
Hi Neighbors!
My name is Peter Wright and I am running for the Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner seat in 6B08. ANC 6B08 covers the area directly southeast of Lincoln Park, including most of the area between 12th and 16th Streets and E. Capitol and C St SE.
I genuinely enjoy working to better my community and help those around me. That is one of the many reasons why I am running for this position. As an attorney, I represent and help people facing difficult circumstances. In representing indigent criminal defendants, I fight hard to protect people’s rights when the weight of the system bears down on them.
In addition to criminal defense, I work on expungements, personal injury matters, and cases to hold shady housing developers accountable for shoddy work. My work puts me on the front lines of residents’ interactions with District laws, and allows me to understand how policies impact our diverse community. I have lived in the Capitol Hill area exclusively since moving to the District. I immediately fell in love with the historic homes, tree-lined streets, and small-town feel of this area. Our neighborhood is continuing to develop and evolve, creating new and unique challenges. I want to be your voice and fight to ensure that the diverse history of
this area is protected and that the continued development serves to enhance the lives of the residents in the area. I intend to address this through fiercely advocating for the concerns and interests of 6B08 residents in discussing and advising on different issues. I am excited about the prospect of putting my passions and skills to work in service of this community and will work hard to serve the interests of its residents.
Over the coming weeks, and throughout my term if I am elected, I want to hear directly from you. The goal of the ANC is to bring the people closer to their government and the government closer to the people. I want to hear how your ANC can best serve you, your concerns about things occurring in 6B08, and 6B overall, what issues are most important to you, and thoughts on how our area can be improved.
