To Do From Home: Week of June 4, 2020

We applaud and stand with those of you who are exercising your First Amendment right. Photo by @monikerdc and wheatpaste by @absurdlywell via our #thehillishome hashtag.

We’ve made it to Thursday, also known in more innocent times as “Friday lite.” There is a lot of electricity in the air– from all the peaceful assembly and the empowerment and the solidarity. Don’t forget to be an ally every day! Have you supported a Black-owned business lately? How about watching Charles Allen’s Budget Town Hall tonight starting at 7:30 p.m. on Facebook live while ordering dinner from one of the many Black-owned businesses on the Hill? You can check out Anela Malik’s list of Black-owned businesses around the DMV here. Get some oxtails from District Soul Food or some doubles from Cane. Get some po’ boys and a hurricane to go from Po’ Boy Jim. Get Ethiopian from Ethiopic or Eritrean from Keren. Grab some sweet pastries from Hype or the Sweet Lobby or Souk and wash it all down with a wine from Chat’s. Vegan? Get some Khepra’s. Just do it and your tastebuds will not regret it one bit.

But what else can you do? You can check out the short films of the Ibero-American Film Festival here.

Over at Mosaic Theater, you can catch their Mosaic Alive Virtual Programming every Monday and Friday. This Friday, catch the dialogue with Voices from A Changing Middle East Festival Artists.

Need to update your books? Scott Abel of Solid State Books recently shared his Infinite Playlist of books. Check it out. Want to read books focused on the African American experience? Check out Mahogany Books’ bookshelf.

The events of the past few days have made it necessary to have conversations with children about race in America. Here are two chances for you to start or continue a conversation with the little ones.

Tonight, you can watch a KidLit rally for Black Lives, starting at 7 p.m. on Facebook live. More info and the link to watch here.

Saturday, you can catch a very special CNN/Sesame Street town call at 10 a.m.. Click here to watch.

Plan ahead: Did you know that June 13 is Rosé all Day, uh, Day? Our friends at The Yards certainly did. You can get a Rosé All Day party box by registering here, then picking it up at District Winery, Shilling Canning Company, Maxwell Park or . Finally, make sure you tune in via Instagram Live at @TheYardsDC to listen to sets by DJs such as DJ Farrah Flosscettand Tezrah. You can also learn how to make flower crowns and, well, that did it: I’m in.
