The Set List, Week of February 20, 2020

Is there anything better than live music? Don’t answer that. For me, the answer is complicated (everything is complicated). But these venues are simply great and you should go to them because support local and support music and support all the things that make YOU happy. Happy birthday, Kurt Cobain! What would have happened to you if you’d lived to see the zoo in which we live? Don’t answer that.

Ardmore, will play at the Pie Shop this Saturday. What are you waiting for? Go see them! Photo courtesy of the Pie Shop, via screenshot.

Thursday, February 20: Tonight at Mr. Henry’s, catch cavaco player Pablo Regis. What is a cavaco, you might ask? It’s a Portuguese instrument belonging to the guitar family and it’s clear you need to hear it live. Reservations.

Saturday, February 22:

Local band Ardmore at the Pie Shop DC, 1:30 p.m. free matinee. We see you, Amy Nazarov, looking cool in your new bluegrass-and-more band! Tickets.

Want more local flavor? Go-go band What? is playing at City Winery tonight and you can still get tickets. More info. Listen.

Proving that 90s nostalgia is not just extremely fun but profitable, Maggie Shot Burns is yet another cleverly named 90s tribute band ready to play all your favorites at Dirty Water starting at 10 p.m. Don some plaid and dust off a choker. Listen.

Tuesday, February 25:

Was one of your New Year’s resolutions, MORE JAZZ? If so, why not kick it at Songbyrd with Shaolin Jazz’s Can I Kick It? This monthly event is a combination of martial arts and DJ-spun tunes set to a movie– this time it’s “The Black Dragon’s Revenge.” More info. Free.

Thursday, February 27:

Catch Big Head Todd and the Monsters at The Hamilton and feel old and young at the same time. Info. Tickets– standing room only.

Gentle reminder: Do you have tickets to the Air Sex Championships, um, coming this March 4? This delightfully campy event promises to arouse, tingle and please until you can’t take it any more. More info. Tickets.
