Neighborhood Mysteries: Weird Symbol on my Car!

If you live and drive on the Hill, your car probably has had its share of battle scars from sitting out on the street. From careless drivers hitting your car and not leaving so much as a note (see THIH alum Tim Ebner’s tweet below), to kind of losing 10 years’ worth of recipes in an instant, to people making off with all your wheels, lately we’ve heard some really interesting stories about things that happen to people’s cars.

Reader Meghan Savercool sent us an email with what’s been happening to her car, and hoping any neighbors have answers. Although it’s not as terrible as destruction of property, it’s an unsettling thing to do to a person’s car.

I live at 6th and H NE and park my car on the street (usually on 6th between G and I, NE). Twice in the last two weeks a weird symbol has been drawn on my car, once on the headlight (which I noticed on Feb 10) and most recently (happened [February 18]) on my driver’s side window.
It’s in some kind of red paint but not permanent. The first one washed off on its own. The symbol is very small. I have no idea what it means, but very creepy that it’s been twice now. Im really concerned about it and was wondering if y’all had heard that it’s happened to anyone else on the Hill/H Street?? I contacted police and they took a report, but I don’t know how high priority it will be for them.

Thanks to a brief Google search, I discovered that the symbol on Meghan’s car is a Japanese symbol akin to an asterisk, though not used quite in the same way as a western asterisk is used. The symbol is referred to as a “rice symbol” or reference mark. Could there be some weird Anime fans out there defiling cars? If your car has been branded with this symbol, or in a similar fashion, give us a holler on Facebook or Twitter, won’t you?
