Greetings friends! Big holiday weekend ahead for some of us. DCPS is taking a mini-break and I am so grateful for the break from waking teens. Of course, this job is replaced by the “waiting up for teens” which is even less pleasant. The local pools should be opening even though the weather may not cooperate, so looky here and see what else you can do.

Tonight, head over to Bar Elena (414 H Street NE) for an Evening Office Hours with Councilmember Charles Allen. These are frequently held on in the mornings so if you cannot make any of those more coffee-based chats, now is your chance to catch his ear over beers and let him know your concerns. Or just come for the skeeball–tthat’s fine too. Office hours are 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

I have mentioned this before but I believe in full disclosure: I work for the Councilmember and therefore I will be there as well, so be nice.

The 9 Singer Songwriter series is back, this time at Pearl Street Warehouse at The Wharf. Founded by singer/songwriter Justin Trawick, The 9 Songwriter Series show was created with the idea of nine artists getting together and combining their talents in order to play in nicer clubs and to larger amounts of people. The artists will perform solo and likely with each other. Tickets are $10 and the show starts at 7pm.

Friday, Robert Finley performs at the Rock and Roll Hotel. The self-taught musician, who had to retire from his carpentry work due to becoming  nearly blind, was discovered by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys. Dan saw a video of Finley performing on the street and he invited him to perform on his next album. Finley is touring in support of his recent album Goin’ Platinum!. The show starts at 8pm and tickets are $10.

You can also go see Saint Joan at the Folger. Kate has the details here.

Saturday is the DC Duck Race, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Washington. This rubber ducky based fundraising event brings together racing plastic duck fans of all ages. The sponsored ducks will be dropped into the water and there will be prizes! Non-racers can still enjoy the food and fun from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Learn all about it here.

Sunday night, Willie Nelson performs at the Anthem. I feel like that is all you need to know. Sure, we are not heading to the beach but we might get to hear Willie sing Crazy. And that will be enough. The tickets are expensive, but national treasures…

You could also opt for the free-yet-crowded Memorial Day Concert at the Capitol. Do you sometimes forget with all the hassle of metro reboots and the missed trash pick-up that we live adjacent to iconic spaces? Well, enjoy your local status and walk over to the West Lawn. The annual event honors those who have served in the military, their families, and those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. The National Symphony Orchestra and others will perform and the event is free. Gates will open at 5 p.m. and they will be checking your bags. Otherwise, PBS is your friend.
