The Set List: Thrice Interview

Rock lovers everywhere have made Thrice a part of their collections for nearly two decades and they’re back at it again. Their most recent hit, “Black Honey,” comes from their newest album and already has over 18.2 million streams on Spotify alone. Give “Black Honey” a listen: The catchy melodies and atmospheric feel will move Thrice right to the top of your playlist.

Thrice is currently on tour in support of their ninth record, To Be Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere. The album, released last year, had the highest chart debut of the band’s career and received praise from listeners around the world. Rock Sound magazine called it “a true artistic diamond in the often cookie-cutter world of rock music.”

I caught up with Ed Breckenridge, Thrice’s bassist, via email, to chat about the success of the band, their writing process, and the spirit of giving.

Since forming in 1998, Thrice has become a staple of the post-hardcore music scene and a huge influence on bands over the years. What’s the secret to such a long and successful career in a band? Breckenridge, who has spent more than half of his life playing with Thrice, attributes the success to their excitement about the “endless creative possibilities with music” as a band. He believes that bands unravel when the music becomes more about what the fans want rather than the creative expression.

After a short hiatus from 2012 to 2016, the band continues to be committed to staying true to themselves. Their brilliant and powerful lyrics surrounding social conflicts, depression, and religion is just part of what makes Thrice such an influential band.

“We’re still together because exploring music is still exciting and we’re truly grateful people support our journey.”

One of the most inspiring endeavors of Thrice is their commitment to charity. For each album they release, a portion of the sales go to help organizations in need. While choosing the charity is a full band affair, Breckenridge himself has looked into supporting organizations dealing with hurricane relief for Puerto Rico and Houston, science advocacy, prison reform, and cancer research.

Catch Thrice alongside co-headliners Circa Survive and support from Balance & Composure and Chon at the Fillmore Silver Spring on November 16. There are still tickets left so pick them up here while you can!
