Capitol Hill has always been home to an avid group of readers, and books have consistently brought our community together—whether it’s Second Saturdays spent perusing the stacks at Capitol Hill Books with Jim (and free wine and cheese); debating the merits of a novel at an East City Bookshop book club gathering one evening; having a Literary Feast dinner at a neighbor’s house; or simply strolling into Riverby Books.

This Sunday, May 7th , Capitol Hill will have yet another opportunity to celebrate the written word—as well as celebrating those of our own who have penned it—at the Literary Hill Bookfest. Taking place from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the North Hall of Eastern Market, the Literary Hill Bookfest will feature author talks, a children’s corner (complete with story time), and a poetry open mic to follow the festivities at Tunnicliff’s Tavern. Also represented at the BookFest are the Hill’s booksellers, libraries, publishers, and other organizations with a focus on books.

The Literary Hill BookFest, which is run entirely by volunteers, began as a way of turning the Hill Rag’s Literary Hill column (written by Karen Lyon and showcasing local authors) into a live event. Since the spring of 2011, this event has been bringing authors who live on or write about Capitol Hill together with their readers with the ultimate goal of making our community a respected center for literacy and the humanities in the metropolitan D.C. area. Last year, an estimated 1,500 people turned out to meet local writers and learn more about literary servicesin the area, and we hope that this year’s Literary Hill Bookfest is even bigger and better.

Hope to see you there!
