Yes, it’s that last week of school for District of Columbia Public Schools! It’s a time filled with wonder and excitement for those who are young, and for sheer agonizing dread for parents who need to find something to do for their kids. Summer is also a time for those who are child-free to wax nostalgic about the good old times when responsibility was not weighing down on their shoulders as heavily and when the most complex task in the event horizon was simply whether to play tennis or to go swimming.

I have something exciting for all of you very different groups of people: Serve Your City, a non-profit organization whose mission is “to create essential learning opportunities for at-risk District of Columbia students through innovative programming and the engagement of passionate volunteers,” has a summer program upcoming! Starting next week, there will be swimming, rowing and tennis programs available through SYC. You can sign kids up for an application fee of $25 per family and $60 per participant OR you can volunteeer!

The Camps

Swimming: Tuesdays and Thursdays starting June 23 at the Randall pool, 25 Eye Street NW, from 5-7 p.m. Through July 30.

Rowing: Mondays and Wednesdays starting June 22 at the Anacostia Community Boathouse, 1900 M Street SE, from 4-6 p.m. Through August 19.

Tennis: Fridays starting July 10 at Eastern High School, 1700 East Capitol Street NE. Through August 21.

The Volunteering

If you want to help kids and have a blast this summer, contact Maurice Cook at 202-341-1732 or email mcook[dot] serveyourcity [at] gmail [dot] com. You can also click this link and fill out a volunteer form. One of the most important volunteer positions SYC must fill is a tennis instructor: this is a great chance to keep up with your skills while helping out the community and having a blast.

More Help

If you are not into summer sports and you don’t have kids, you can still help out. Click here to find out how!

http://summer.dc.gov/ , the DC government’s summer site for children and youth, has a list of camps (http://summer.dc.gov/page/summer-programming). I’ll send the camp info you’ve listed to DC gov to have them added to the list!
