Eat Local!

Screen Shot 2013-07-23 at 12.27.00 PMThink about what you regularly eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Do you know where your eggs came from? How about the bacon and the milk? Do you know who made the tofu and the beer, and who picked the peppers and the lettuce? Chances are, many of your replies will be limited to the name of the supermarket where you bought your food, even for organic items: as a matter of fact, many organic foods are produced as far away as Mexico and China, and you probably had no idea. More and more people in the DC area, however, are paying attention to where their food comes from, and the Farm-to-Table movement is gaining momentum.

This is the reason behind Eat Local First DC: to make you aware that food that is locally sourced is better for your body and for the local economy. If you want to read more about it, click on the Eat Local First FAQ. There, you will find a simple but powerful breakdown of how your food choices affect others’ lives, not just your own.

Right now, across the District, many restaurants and other food establishments are celebrating Eat Local First, with events such as happy hours, talks, and garden tours. If you are interested in attending any of these events, click here to see a schedule.

Our local participating restaurants on the Hill are Art & Soul, Lavagna and Sonoma Wine & Bar Bistro. It’s looking like eating out is in the cards this week: do it for the economy!
