Be Green While You Spring Clean

It turns out there’s good reason behind the old “in like a lion, out like a lamb” saying about March. So far this month, we’ve seen temps near 60 and on the opposite end, 30 degrees and freezing windchills. But you can be sure our dear friend Spring is just around the corner — and with her arrival, comes spring cleaning! While decluttering and organizing your Hill home in the next few weeks, consider taking advantage of the below ways to “be green” while doing it.

Don’t trash those old blankets, sheets and towels. Saving Grace Services will happily take them along with other soft items. Donations will be delivered to the NY Avenue Dog Shelter. Items can be dropped off at 224 9th St NE (leave on the front porch) through next Friday. For more information visit their facebook page. Fellow THIH writer Jon Penndorf reports that Atlas Vet & Union Vet will also take donations of clean used towels.

The Department of Public Works will pick up large, bulky items if you already receive DPW trash collection. Call the Citywide Call Center at 311 to make an appointment. Up to seven items can be collected at one time. Examples of acceptable items include air conditioners, furniture, large toys, mattresses, rugs and major appliances. Visit the DPW website for a complete listing. If you have the means, residents can drop off bulk items at the Ft. Totten Transfer Station at 4900 John F. McCormack Road, NE.

Its important to dispose of hazardous waste properly or you risk harm to yourself, your family, neighbors and your pets! Hazardous waste items can be dropped off (also at Ft. Totten) the first Saturday of the month (except holidays), between 8 am and 3 pm. Have a bunch of old bills or papers? Document shredding is also available during this time.

Freecycle is a good place to get rid of things you no longer want, and perhaps pick up some things that you do! Join the local DC group to see what’s up for grabs in your neighborhood.

You can also check out some eco-friendly cleaning products at Frager’s (or mix your own with a few basic kitchen items).

  1. There is plenty of room on the porch for more bags. Please bring your donations over through this weekend as well: 224 9th Street NE (between Constitution and C St.)
