Happy Flag Day

This event isn’t exactly on the Hill but I love the DC flag and have much pride for this dear city, and our neighborhood is one of the city’s oldest, so I wanted to share.

To celebrate Flag Day, and specifically the DC flag, there will be a series of events TODAY beginning in Dupont Circle from 5pm-8pm (a DC Flag tattoo flash mob) and continuing until midnight at Eighteenth Street Lounge, where musical performances from Bluebrain (DJ Set), Jonny Grave & The Tombstones, Fire and the Wheel, Adrian Parsons (DJ Set) will send DC Flag revelers into the early morning.

Did you know that the DC flag is modeled after George Washington’s coat of arms?  I’m not the only one that thinks it’s a pretty great design — along with the many people that have tattooed it to their bodies (I’m way to scared of needles and commitment to do so…), it won a 2004 city flag contest on the  North American Vexillological Association website.  And in 2001 it placed eighth in design quality out of the 72 Canadian provincial, U.S. state, and U.S. territory flags ranked. So show your pride today and see if you can spot a few good DC flags around the city to add to our Flickr pool.
