The weather seems downright balmy right now since last week’s insane heat wave seems to have broken. Perhaps this weekend we won’t need to seek refuge inside refrigerated rooms. In fact it would be a great time to cheer on the home team as they face the Mets. They may be from New York but Met fans are not as annoying as Yankee fans. I’m related to several of both kind so trust me on that. Either way the games should be good times all around.
What other non-baseball events can we suggest to spice up your weekend?
Who doesn’t love a good drag queen flick? Tonight catch The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, part of the Atlas Summer Film Series. And if you saw the US remake with the late Patrick Swayze you still need to check out the original. All movies are just $2.
Celeb chef, Marcus Samulelsson is headed to Eastern Market at lunchtime of Friday as part of the Macy’s Chefs-A-Go-Go traveling Food Truck program. Oh that rustling you hear is just Escoffier tossing and turning. Let him. He only had to write one book and be relevant forever. Today chefs need to hustle. The chef of New York’s Scandinavian-chic Aquavit will be dishing free grub from 11am until 3pm. Donations are encouraged, for every $1 donated Macy’s will be able to provide seven meals at the nation’s food banks. It’s a nationwide effort and you can read all about it here.
“All I want is a room some where. Far away from the cold night air…” Sure Audrey Hepburn didn’t sing a note and Julie Andrews was totally robbed, but the film version of My Fair Lady is still a stunner. Funny, charming and romantic, what’s not to like? It plays at the Atlas Friday at 8pm.
So it’s not on the Hill but Saturday is the debut of the Investigating Where We Live exhibit at the National Building Museum. Each summer groups of local teams examine local neighborhoods. This year H Street was chosen as well as Bloomingdale and Mount Pleasant. The teens came by the Atlas and were really interested in the history of the H Street area. Yours truly was interviewed but I haven’t seen anything so if any of that footage made it to the exhibit and I appear dorky, I apologize. The exhibit runs through May 28, 2012
“There’s nothing I can’t resist, except temptation.” Juicy bon mots such as those are why Oscar Wilde is still being performed today. Scena Theater gives his classic The Importance of Being Earnest a gender bending twist in its current run at the H Street Playhouse but the hilarity and astute social observations remain.
Sunday, I suggest some brunch, perhaps a stroll around the market or a picnic at Yards park. Bring the tots to the Nats game and let them run the bases after the game. Who cares if they win or lose? A good photo op is priceless.

“To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything” was not a remake of “Priscilla” although perhaps it is more like an homage/plot theft. Priscilla is a great chance to see Agent Smith/Elrond/Red Skull (Hugo Weaving) and King Edward VIII/Memento guy (Guy Pearce) before they were famous in U.S. movies. Also Superman’s nemesis, General Zod (Terrence Stamp) is in the mix.
