The To Do List

Let’s open with a tried-and-true line, shall we?  HOT ENOUGH FOR YA???  Well, we are deep in the throes of the dog days of summer, and in the middle of a big, bad heat wave– Friday is supposed to be over 100 degrees and sensitive groups should stay indoors.  So let’s find you some fun things to do that also allow you to suck in some cold and delicious air conditioning,  shall we?

Right off the bat, let us remind you that today, Thursday July 21, is the last glorious day of Belgian Week.  Amazing Belgian food and beer (perhaps breakfast at Le Pain Quotidien, lunch at  Belga Cafe, dinner at Granville Moore’s– just sayin’) and air conditioning?  What could be better?

This is also the last weekend for the Capitol Fringe Festival, you know: you can catch Capital City Players of Washington, DC and their performance of 70 Million Tons, 8pm at CHAW’s Black Box Theater, 545 7th Street SE ($17) this Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

If live theater is not your thing, the Atlas is throwing down this summer!  During the whole summer, Atlas Performing Arts Center is keeping you cool and entertained with movies, Thursday through Sunday, starting at 8pm for the amazing price of FREE!   On Thursday, their Gay 101 series brings us “The Kids are Alright”.  Friday is Musicals, so get ready to sing along with “Hair.”  On Saturday, their family-oriented series brings “Babe: The Gallant Pig.”  Finally, what better way to end the weekend than to watch Spike Lee’s “Clockers”?  Okay, so maybe “Clockers” isn’t the most cheerful movie ever: this means you must absolutely grab a pint or something tasty to eat at the Queen Vic afterward, right?

But let’s say that you really just want to listen to some good and refreshingly different music?  Well! Lucky for you, Latin Grammy Winner Afro Bop Alliance is this Saturday’s entertainment in the Courtyard at Gallery O on H, 1354 H Street, NE ($5).

But what if you actually want to sweat it up in an air-conditioned environment?  Why not stop in at CHAW and learn or practice tango?  When done right, the Argentine dance can be a scorcher in its own right, so it seems like the right time of year to go for it!  Show up in your dancing shoes this Friday, from 6:30 to 9pm — it’s FREE!

Speaking of dance, the Atlas is hosting several workshops in the Dance DC Festival!  From noon until 8pm, workshops will be held exploring dance and movement, and all of them are FREE (and air-conditioned)!  DC’s website has more information on the festival, including other off-Hill and outdoor activities.

Finally, let’s talk about the weather, seriously: at the National Museum of the American Indian, you can catch the opening of a fascinating exhibit called Conversations with Earth: Indigenous Voices on Climate Change, running through January, 2012.

Until next week, stay cool, everybody!
