Join The Congressional Chorus

A classmate I had at GW once told me, during our final week as students, that she wasn’t afraid of not being able to find a job after graduation. What scared her the most, she said, was not singing. After four years in the choir and in an a Capella group, it was easy for her to fit performing into the utopia of college—but in the real world? And in DC, where you’re more likely to have a run-in with a state senator than a musician? Luckily for DC residents looking to continue (or even begin!) their interests in music and singing, The Congressional Chorus is auditioning for their 2011-2012 season throughout July and August.

The Congressional Chorus’ auditions are open to any DC, Maryland, or Virginia residents. Although the lineup for the season isn’t finalized, typical past performances include themed cabarets, folk songs and spirituals, and holiday concerts. Rehearsals are Monday evenings at the Atlas Performing Arts Center (1333 H Street, NE).

There is also a great option for younger DC residents, ages eight to 14, interested in music and performing with the American Youth Chorus. The after-school program is open to both novices and experienced singers. Choristers get the chance to perform at the Kennedy Center, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, and the US Capitol Building. Singers aged eight to ten meet on Tuesdays from 4:30 to 6; aged 11 to 14 meet on Thursdays at the same time.

To get more information about auditions and to schedule an appointment, email Debby McConnell or call 202-399-7993, x182. Give it a chance, even if it’s been years since you’ve read music or swayed to and fro at an a Cappella concert.
