The days are getting longer, the sun is shining more, and a non-holiday weekend is on the way. Thus, it’s all the much more important to nail down your weekend plans, and if possible, get started on Thursday!
Thursday — January 21
Start your weekend off right with “Blingo,” the fastest game of Bingo in town at Sticky Rice at 1224 H Street NE. And, this week, they are adding to the fun by having a raffle and a Haitian DJ (DJ Relax). They’ve decided to donate 5% of their sales to Partners in Health, a non-profit humanitarian aid organization very active in Haiti.
Friday — January 22
If you’d like to start your Friday with something a little different, I encourage you to meet a friend at the National Portrait Gallery in Chinatown. It’s open until 7 p.m. each day and currently has an exhibit “One Life: Echoes of Elvis.” The exhibit celebrates Elvis Presley’s 75th birthday with a variety of Elvis-inspired art from William Eggleston’s shot of the TV room at Graceland to Robert Arneson’s Roman emperor-like bust (including the slightly curled lip).
This weekend is the last chance to see The Lion in Winter by the St. Marks Players. The Lion in Winter explores the clash of the personal and political at the highest levels of power and how family quarrels can translate into war and treason. If you’d like to support quality community theatre right here on the Hill, don’t delay to see this show.
It’s not in the neighborhood, but if you’d like to support humanitarian efforts in Haiti with your fork and cocktail glass, head to Local 16 on U Street on Friday night. An organization called Do Good, Feel Good DC (DGFG), will host an event called Friday for Haiti to benefit Oxfam America’s Haitian Earthquake Response Fund. For $25, do-gooders will get free beer, an appetizer buffet and discounted specialty cocktails, with the total ticket price going to relief efforts, as well as 10% of the nights bar proceeds.
Saturday — January 23
A Workshop for Kids and Families: Red, White, and Blue Valentines.
If you have a friend or relative in the military, drop by the National Postal Museum and show you care by creating a handmade card for Valentine’s Day – and making sure it gets there by February 14th. After making your card, take a spin through “Victory Mail” to see correspondence from World War II. 11 am-3 pm. In the Atrium, Lower Level at the National Postal Museum, 2 Mass. Ave., NE.
