It’s the last weekend of August so that means this To-Do List has some last chance activities and a few great deals.
So, start by soaking up some culture. The Folger Shakespeare Library’s exhibit, “The Curatorial Eye: Discoveries from the Folger Vault,” ends on Saturday, August 29. If you’ve not yet seen this Washington Post Editor’s Pick, try to go by the library at 201 East Capitol Street SE between 10am and 5pm to catch a glimpse of selections from the library’s permanent collection, and learn how these items continue to yield new findings.
The other great cultural activity of the weekend also involves Shakespeare. While it requires you to step a bit beyond the boundaries of Capitol Hill, I recommend you find time between August 27 and September 12 to attend the Shakespeare Free For All. For the first time, this event is being held indoors (instead of at Carter Baron Amphitheatre) at the Sydney Harmon Hall in Chinatown (610 F Street NW). This year’s show is The Taming of the Shrew. Tickets are free and can be picked up at the box office up to 2 hours before the show begins. You can even have a picnic on the grounds of the Building Museum beforehand for that old-school Shakespeare in the part ambiance. So, grab a sandwich from your favorite spot around Eastern Market and head over to Chinatown for a wonderful picnic and play.
Finally, if you haven’t been there yet, this is the last week for free Saturday admission to the Corcoran Gallery of Art. All summer long the museum, located at 500 17th Street NW, has offered complimentary tours, workshops and performances.
All that culture can work up a thirst, so enjoy ½ price beers and wine at SOVA from 5:30-7:30. SOVA wine and espresso bar is at 1359 H Street NE.
If you feel like letting loose, Rock & Roll Hotel has Cobra Starship, The Affair, Moonwalk’s Prelude and Mother Mother scheduled to perform this weekend. Or, just improve your mini-golf score at The H Street Country Club.
And, the DC Dance Festival runs all weekend and opens with a performance at the Atlas Performing Arts Center. On Friday night at 7pm, you can see “Live! A Bollywood Experience” for free.
Enjoy the weekend.
