Meet the Candidates: Leroy Thorpe ANC 6E02

We have offered to post brief statements from all of the ANC candidates running for seats on Capitol Hill and the surrounding neighborhoods that we cover here on The Hill is Home.  These statements are not endorsements and have been posted exactly as submitted by the candidates. 

Leroy Thorpe is a former ANC Commissioner from the Shaw community having served 18 years from 1986 to 2006. Leroy pioneered the the citizens patrol movement in DC with his famous Red Hats Patrol closing down 56 crack houses mostly in Shaw paving the way for economic development and new residents. Leroy earned three Congressional Records recognition, Mayoral Proclamations, Eight City Council Resolutions, Recognition from former First Lady Nancy Reagan, Numerous police badges and awards from former DC Police Chief Charles Ramsey and Cathy Lanier and was recognized by Third District Police Commander Jacob Kishter in 2015 for “Citizen of the Year,” for his anti-crime efforts.

Leroy is the President of the historic Shaw East Central Civic Association responsible to keeping peace during the 1968 riots in DC. Leroy is a life member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., USTA Tennis Member, have written two books of poetry, earned a Masters Degree, A Licensed Social Worker for the DC Government and is a Licensed Professional Counselor – An alumnus of Marshall University, Howard University and the University of the District of Columbia. Leroy is married with children and enjoys international travel, fishing, trapping, hunting, reading and writing.

Leroy wants to focus, on public safety, parking issues, more bike lanes, reducing vandalism to homes and businesses and constituent services for his neighbors regarding street and alley cleaning, graffiti removal, affordable housing for college students and viable economic development.
