13th Street Garden – Construction Begins!

Currently just an ugly construction site.

Since moving to The Hill in June 2009, I’ve wondered what — if anything — would eventually be built at the corner of 13th and C Streets SE. Sure, it had a sign promising a “community park and garden,” but there weren’t any specifics. The garden was simply promised at some “future” date.

The site is owned by the DC Housing Authority as part of the Kentucky Courts retirement community — and for decades, it’s been vacant. In 2007, local residents organized to plan a community park and garden — and they were able to garner the support of D.C. Housing Authority director Mike Kelly and Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells.

Fast forward to September 2009, and the DC Housing Authority was awarded over $650,000 from Department of Housing and Urban Development for the park. We’ve previously written about the 13th Street Community Park and Garden, but within the last week, construction has started. The site should be completed by early spring 2011.
