The holidays bring out the kid in most of us, and it’s no wonder. But many area kids don’t get to experience the holidays in the same way. However, the city is home to numerous social service organizations that seek to fill these children’s needs. If you’re planning on doing some year-end charitable giving of your own, consider giving to the Sasha Bruce Youthwork. You can read about one of their recent success stories here. The organization makes its home on Barracks Row.

Sasha Bruce House was started in 1977 to provide troubled youth with a safe haven from the dangers of the streets. It’s one of the largest and most experienced providers of services to youth in Washington, DC, and helps young people find safe homes, achieve and maintain good health and mental health, create and strengthen supportive and stable families, and explore opportunities in education and careers. The organization provides shelter, counseling, life skills training and positive youth development activities to approximately 1,500 youth and 5,000 family members each year.

Here’s the most important information, at least for this post’s purpose. For not a large donation, you can make a positive impact on the lives of these at-risk children. For a $50 donation, you can provide school supplies for a young person whose parent is struggling to make ends meet. A $100 donation provides tools for 2 youth in the Sasha Bruce construction training program. A $250 gift will provide HIV education and testing for 20 young people. If able, consider making a major donation; $500 will provide shelter for a week for a homeless child. There are also many ways to volunteer.
