We have offered to post brief statements from all of the ANC candidates running for seats on Capitol Hill and the surrounding neighborhoods that we cover here on The Hill is Home. These statements are not endorsements and have been posted exactly as submitted by the candidates.
About Me:
I am a nine year resident of the District and a recent homeowner in Capitol Park IV. I am an avid fan of the Georgetown Hoyas and Washington Nationals, and enjoy using Capital Bikeshare and car2go to get around the city. What I love most about living in the Southwest neighborhood is the access to downtown D.C. and the proximity to new developments near the Nationals Stadium and The Wharf.
Important Issues:
Earlier this year, the mayor unveiled a plan to open a homeless shelter at the site of Blind Whino, and many residents within 6D02 expressed opposition to the plan. The legislation ultimately fell through, and a new location was selected within the community. Addressing homelessness within the District is a very important priority, and I believe that there should be open communication leading to consensus decisions that include community buy-in. What’s the status on the Randall School redevelopment and how will it impact residents? What can be done to improve the availability of street parking for residents? Can the city build a crosswalk along the north side of I Street intersection with South Capitol Street? I want to promote these dialogues between the appropriate stakeholders.
Why I am running:
I have a vested interest in the future of this neighborhood as a recent homeowner. When I heard there was going to be a vacant position on the ANC, I viewed it as a great opportunity to directly advocate for the interests of residents when D.C. government and large developers make decisions that impact the community. I am going to grossly paraphrase Teddy Roosevelt here and say that I would much rather be the man in the arena representing the voice of residents and trying my best to contribute to solutions than be on the sidelines being critical of those who are trying to do what they believe is best for the community.
I believe the following are important:
- Positive partnerships with existing and new developments
- Transparency and open communication with respect to decision-making
- Safe and healthy neighborhoods
- Common sense
How to reach me:
I encourage residents within 6D02 to contact me at pbiedlingmaier6D02@gmail.com to share viewpoints on what’s great and what needs to be improved within our neighborhood.
