Are you one of the few who actually stays in town in August? You’re not alone – I know many Washingtonians who love staying in town during the steamy month since it becomes wonderfully quiet as everyone else escapes to the beach. Here are some of our top picks for how to spend this weekend in town!
Thursday, August 13
Stop by SOVA for live bluegrass by The Extension Agents at 9pm in the upstairs lounge area.
Afterward, head down the street for a game of Blingo at Sticky Rice!
Or, pack up a picnic and go to Tingey Park for outdoor movie night. This week: Back to the Future. There are generally food stands and an ice cream stand at the park, so you’ll have plenty of food options. And be sure to get your free slap bracelet (they’re going with a, like, totally awesome 80’s theme all summer).
Another fun option, stop by Peregrine at 9pm for their latte art throwdown where “baristas from all over the city throw in five bucks, winner takes all. Add some drinks and fun for all!”
Friday, August 14
Kick off your weekend with live entertainment at Marvelous Market on 7th Street.
Later in the evening, Rock & Roll Hotel will be kicking off its 3rd anniversary on Friday with Jukebox the Ghost.
Saturday, August 15
Start your morning off right with a delicious breakfast from Market Lunch, following it up with some shopping at Eastern Market. Yard Sales have been popping up all over the neighborhood, so enjoy the sunshine while strolling around looking for some special finds.
Looking to spend some quality time with your pooch (you know he misses you when you’re at work during the week!)? Take him to Union Pub for Yappy Hour from noon-4pm, or go to the Argonaut‘s Yappy Hour from noon-6pm. Don’t have a dog yet? Go to Chateau Animaux for the dog adoption Saturday from 12-2pm! (Cat lovers should stop by on Sunday for cat adoption day from 12-3pm).
If you’re interested in some live music, head over to RFK Stadium for Stone Soul Picnic. Along with Chico Debarge, Mary Mary, Ginuwine, Chuck Brown and Ruben Studdard, there will also be cultural foods, children’s activities, product sampling, an ethnic marketplace, and under and more.
Catch The Raging Tide at CHAW’s Films on the Hill at 7pm, and then wander up to 8th Street or 7th Street for some dessert or a drink.
Sunday, August 16
If you haven’t checked out the weekend pool parties at the Capitol Skyline Hotel, make this the weekend you do. Head over at noon for Spike’d Sundays and your $10 entry fee will get you a burger grilled by Good Stuff’s Spike. The party goes from noon until 6pm with a DJ, beer, lounge chairs, and a big pool. (not recommended for kids)
For something a little more family friendly, walk over to the US Botanic Garden for an exhibit on chocolate (YUM!).
And don’t forget that DC Beer Week kicks off on H Street at 2pm! We have all the details here, which include events on the Hill every night this week.
Monday, August 17
Northeast Neighborhood Library (330 7th St, NE) is hosting a Summer Reading Wrap-Up Party for children ages 0-14. The party will include book bingo & prizes, stories, crafts and refreshments. Festivities will be in the Children’s Room, from 3:30 to 5pm.
