I have lived in more than 10 homes across the country and I can say, without equivocation, that we live in one of the most amazing neighborhoods in the world. We are within a 20 minute walk of absolutely everything one could need: grocery stores, stadiums, bars, restaurants, parks, and thousands of friendly people. That’s urban living; but at the same time we have the benefits of a residential area: quiet streets, yards, trees, and sometimes one can even find parking.
Because of the idyllic nature of our neighborhood demand to live here is high–investors are cleaning derelict properties, developers are building on vacant lots, and many residents are adding rooms. This is by and large a good thing; it shows a vibrancy in our neighborhood that serves all of us well. But it also worsens an already poor parking situation and causes occasional architectural eyesores. It is the job of an ANC Commissioner to make sure the neighbors are ready to accommodate these changes.
Our neighborhood is not only becoming more populace, it is also becoming wealthier. More and more people are choosing to dine out more often and our corridors are quickly adding more options. Many of these establishments are adding outdoor seating on our sidewalks which, for better or worse, has an impact on the neighborhood. It is the job of an ANC Commissioner to make sure establishments and neighbors can live in peace.
I take the job of protecting the unique character of our neighborhood and working with my neighbors seriously. I think the people of ANC6B08 deserve an active and assertive member of the commission. I will be that member.
