- MPD Arrests Suspect in Fatal Shooting of 3-year-old Girl
The Metropolitan Police Department announces the arrest of a suspect in the fatal shooting that occurred early Saturday in the 1000 block of 14th Street, Southeast.
On Saturday, July 5, 2025, at approximately 3:03 a.m., First District officers responded to the report of a shooting in the 1000 block of 14th Street, Southeast. Officers located a 3-year-old girl suffering a gunshot wound to the upper body. DC Fire and EMS responded to the scene and transported the girl to an area hospital, where she received treatment for critical injuries.
On Monday, July 7, 2025, the victim succumbed to her injuries. The victim has been identified as 3-year-old Honesty Cheadle, of Southeast, DC.
Detectives from MPD’s Major Case squad led this investigation and identified the sole suspect in this shooting as 24-year-old Charles Rucker, of Southeast, DC. On Friday, July 11, 2025, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force located and arrested Rucker without incident. Rucker is charged, pursuant to a DC Superior Court arrest warrant, with First Degree Murder while Armed.
“This arrest is a testament to the diligent and painstaking police work that has occurred around the clock over the past week,” said Chief of Police Pamela A. Smith. “To Honesty’s family, we know today’s news does not make you whole again, but we do hope that this arrest brings some measure of comfort as you grieve this inconceivable loss.”

- MPD Provides Update on Response to Navy Yard Unlawful Activity
The Metropolitan Police Department is providing an update on unlawful activity observed in Navy Yard Friday and Saturday evening, which resulted in a total of 23 arrests. Unlawful activity was not observed in the area on Sunday evening.
During the evening hours of Friday, July 4, 2025, First District officers responded to numerous calls regarding disorderly behavior by groups of juveniles, including the use of illegal fireworks. Most of the activity was observed around the area of First and M Street, Southeast. As a result of these calls, additional officers were called to the area to dissuade further illegal activity.
First District officers made a total of 18 arrests from Friday night through the early morning hours Saturday, 15 juveniles and three adults, which are listed below:

A 14-year-old juvenile male of Upper Marlboro, MD was arrested and charged with Carrying a Pistol without a License. A firearm was recovered.
25-year-old Anthony Sims of Capitol Height, MD was arrested and charged with Public Consumption of Marijuana.
25-year-old Davon Lucas of Northwest, DC was arrested and charged with Simple Assault.
First District officers also stopped a 12-year-old and a 16-year-old for Curfew violations after curfew went into effect at midnight. Both juveniles were later released to parents or guardians.
On the evening of Saturday, July 5, 2025, smaller groups of juveniles engaged in similar unlawful activity around New Jersey Avenue and M Street, Southeast. An enhanced presence of First District officers disrupted the behavior, resulting in the arrest of five juveniles for fireworks related charges. Saturday evening’s arrests are listed below:
12-year-old-juvenile male of Southeast, DC arrested and charged with Fireworks – Discharge and Fireworks – Possession.
13-year-old-juvenile male of Southeast, DC arrested and charged with Fireworks – Possession.
13-year-old-juvenile male of Southeast, DC arrested and charged with Fireworks – Possession.

15-year-old-juvenile male of Southeast, DC arrested and charged with Fireworks – Possession.
400 fireworks, including roman candles, firecrackers, and fireworks rockets, were recovered in the Navy Yard area throughout the weekend.
As activity dissipated in the Navy Yard area Saturday evening, some groups traveled to the U Street corridor, where MPD’s Third District had deployed additional resources to deter behavior already observed in Navy Yard. Seven additional fireworks related arrests were made Saturday night in the Third District and are listed below:

18-year-old Kenneth Reynolds of no fixed address arrested and charged with Fireworks-Discharge.

19-year-old Javon Avents of Northeast, DC arrested and charged with Fireworks – Discharge and Fireworks – Possession.
21-year-old Tranquan Anderson of Southeast, DC arrested and charged with Fireworks – Discharge.
25-year-old Michael Wardell Coker of Upper Marlboro, MD arrested and charged with Assault on a Police Officer and Fireworks – Discharge.
This enforcement in both Navy Yard and the U Street Corridor resulted in a total of 27 fireworks related arrests.
Groups engaging in disorderly behavior were not observed in either Navy Yard or the U Street corridor on Sunday evening.
MPD reiterates that the use of all fireworks that launch and explode is illegal in the District of Columbia.

- MPD Seeking Suspects in Northeast Carjacking
The Metropolitan Police Department is asking for the community’s assistance in the search for suspects in an unarmed carjacking in Northeast.
On Sunday, June 25, 2025, at approximately 9:30 p.m., the victim reported sitting in his vehicle in the 1500 block of Maryland Avenue, Northeast, when multiple suspects approached the victim and assaulted him. The suspects then took the victim’s vehicle and fled the scene.

A man was fatally shot in the District on Monday night in what appeared to be June’s 10th and final homicide of the month, a figure that is half the number of slayings in the city from the month before.

- MPD Shuts Down Mobile Trailer Attempting to Sell Narcotics in Navy Yard
The Metropolitan Police Department announces the arrest of a man for selling controlled substances from a trailer in Navy Yard.
On Friday, June 27, 2025, at approximately 8:50 p.m., First District officers were patrolling in the Navy Yard neighborhood when they observed an illegally parked trailer in the Unit block of M Street, Southeast. The trailer was displaying two neon signs stating, ‘THC Sold Here’ and ‘Open’. Officers interviewed the owner of the trailer, and determined he did not possess a permit to sell marijuana.
Officers seized the trailer as evidence and recovered a total of 340 grams of narcotics consisting of marijuana, THC edibles, cocaine, hashish, and psilocybin mushrooms.
As a result of the investigation, 42-year-old Abel Adem Delta of Alexandria, VA was arrested and charged with Felony Possession with Intent to Distribute Marijuana, Possession of a Controlled Substance (Cocaine), Possession with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance (Hashish), and Possession with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance (Psilocybin Mushrooms).
- MPD Investigating Benning Road Homicide
The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred in Northeast.
On Saturday, July 5, 2025, at approximately 12:51 a.m., Sixth District officers were flagged down in the 2000 block of Benning Road, Northeast, for an unconscious female. Upon arrival, officers located an adult female victim suffering from gunshot wounds. DC Fire and EMS responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital where after all lifesaving efforts failed the victim was pronounced dead.
The decedent has been identified as 28-year-old Daquane Johnson of Northeast, DC.
- MPD Investigating E Street Homicide
The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred in Southeast.
On Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at approximately 2:05 a.m., First District officers responded to the 1800 block of E Street, Southeast, for the report of the sounds of gunshots. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male victim suffering from gunshot wounds. DC Fire and EMS responded to the scene and after all lifesaving efforts failed the victim was pronounced dead.
The decedent has been identified as 50-year-old Lawrence Meekins, of Northwest, DC.

- MPD Searching for Retail Theft Suspects

The Metropolitan Police Department is asking for the community’s assistance in locating multiple suspects in a retail theft offense.
On Monday, June 30, 2025, at approximately 5:11 p.m., First District officers responded to a report of a theft at CVS located in the 500 block of 12th Street, Southeast. The suspects entered the establishment, stole merchandise then fled the scene.

- MPD Seeks a Suspect in a Navy Yard Shooting

The Metropolitan Police Department seeks the public’s assistance to identify and locate a suspect involved in a shooting in Southeast.
At approximately 8:19 p.m., on Friday, July 4, 2025, First District officers responded to the report of a shooting in the 1100 block of Half Street, Southeast. Upon arrival, a 15-year-old juvenile male, was located conscious and breathing, suffering from gunshot wounds. DC Fire and EMS arrived and transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries.

- MPD Arrests Suspects in Northeast Robbery
The Metropolitan Police Department announces the arrest of two suspects involved in a robbery in Northeast.
On Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at approximately 1:37 a.m., First District officers responded to a report of a robbery in the 800 block of H Street, Northeast. Two suspects approached the victim, brandished a knife and forcibly stole the victim’s property before fleeing the scene.
A short time later, officers canvassed the area and located two individuals matching the suspects’ description. As a result of the investigation, 63-year-old Edward Brown and 49-year-old Kamau Knipe both of Northeast, DC, were placed under arrest and charged with Robbery.
- MPD Arrests Suspect in 1999 Homicide
The Metropolitan Police Department announces an arrest in a fatal stabbing that occurred in Northeast in 1999.
On Friday, May 21, 1999, at approximately 5:39 p.m., First District officers responded to the report of an unconscious person in the 400 block of F Street, Northeast. Upon arrival, officers located an adult female victim suffering from stab wounds. DC Fire and EMS responded to the scene and after all lifesaving efforts failed the victim was pronounced dead.
The victim has been identified as 24-year-old Susan Cvengros, of Northeast, DC.
On Tuesday, July 8, 2025, pursuant to a DC Superior Court arrest warrant, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force located and arrested 70-year-old George Mudd, of Northeast, DC. He has been charged with First Degree Murder while Armed (Premeditated).

- MPD Seeking Northeast Assault Suspect
The Metropolitan Police Department is asking for the community’s assistance in identifying a suspect involved in an assault with a dangerous weapon (Tire Iron) that occurred in Northeast.
On Thursday, July 3, 2025, at approximately 1:48 p.m., First District officers responded to the rear of the 1300 block of Florida Avenue, Northeast, for a report of an assault. Upon arrival, officers learned that a male suspect struck the victim from behind with a tire iron before fleeing the scene. DC Fire and EMS transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

- Suspects Sought in L Street Armed Robbery

The Metropolitan Police Department is asking for the community’s assistance in identifying and locating suspects in an armed robbery that occurred in Southeast.
On Saturday, July 5, 2025, at approximately 6:10 p.m., the suspect and the victim arranged to meet via an online marketplace regarding the sale of the victim’s watch. During the exchange in the 600 block of L Street, Southeast, two additional suspects approached, one of the suspects brandished a handgun, and demanded the victim’s watch. The victim complied and the suspects fled the scene.

- Chief of Police Announces Juvenile Curfew Zone in Navy Yard
Chief of Police Pamela A. Smith has announced the establishment of a Juvenile Curfew Zone in the Navy Yard area.
The Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025 gives the Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department the authority to order a Juvenile Curfew Zone in an area where large groups of youths are gathering or intend to gather in a manner that poses a risk of substantial harm to public safety.
The perimeter of the Navy Yard Juvenile Curfew Zone is as follows:
To the north: I-695 and Virginia Avenue, SE
To the east: 8th Street from Virginia Avenue to M Street, SE; 4th Street from M Street, SE to the Anacostia River
To the south: M Street between 4th and 8th Street, SE; Potomac Avenue, SE and the Anacostia River between South Capitol Street and 4th Street, SE
To the west: South Capitol Street, SE from the Anacostia River to I-695
This Juvenile Curfew Zone takes effect at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 11, 2025, and will last through 11:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 13, 2025, when the citywide juvenile curfew will take effect and last through 6:00 a.m. Monday.
Within the Juvenile Curfew Zone, persons 17 and under are prohibited from gathering in a group of nine (9) or more in any public place or on the premises of any establishment unless engaged in certain exempted activities, which are listed here
- MPD Searching for Suspects in H Street Burglary

The Metropolitan Police Department is asking for the community’s assistance in locating three suspects involved in a burglary that occurred in Northeast.
On Monday, July 7, 2025, at approximately 5:10 a.m., three suspects unlawfully entered an establishment located in the 1300 block of H Street, Northeast. The suspects stole merchandise before fleeing the scene.

- MPD Arrests Suspect in an Assault in Northeast
The Metropolitan Police Department announces the arrest of a suspect who shot at a victim during a dispute.
On June 25, 2025, at approximately 4:39 p.m., the suspect discharged a firearm at a man during a dispute in the 1000 block of 16th Street, Northeast. After shooting at the victim, the suspect fled the area. No injuries were reported during this incident.
On Friday, July 11, 2025, as a result of detectives’ investigation, 28-year-old Juwan Russell of Southwest, DC, was arrested and charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Gun).
