  • MPD Investigating Shooting that Injured Three Officers

Agents from the Force Investigation Team of the Metropolitan Police Department’s (MPD) Internal Affairs Bureau are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred in the 300 block of Florida Avenue, Northeast.
On Monday, January 13, 2025, at approximately 4:38 a.m., Fifth District officers responded to the report of an armed suspect inside the lobby of a residential building at the listed location. Responding officers observed the suspect, but the suspect fled into an elevator. Additional officers responded to the scene to search for the suspect. Moments later, the suspect returned to the lobby. Officers immediately attempted to place the suspect into custody and a struggle ensued. During the struggle, the suspect fired his gun at officers, and the officers returned fire, striking the suspect.
Three officers suffered gunshot wounds and were transported to local hospitals conscious and breathing for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Two officers have since been released. The third officer remains hospitalized.
Additional officers immediately attempted life-saving measures on the suspect and DC Fire and EMS were called to the scene. After all lifesaving measures failed, the suspect was pronounced dead.
The suspect has been identified as 45-year-old Derrick Williams of Northeast, DC.
The suspect’s weapon was recovered on the scene and is pictured above.
The involved officers have been placed on administrative leave, pursuant to MPD policy. The release of body-worn camera footage is pursuant to District of Columbia law (D.C. Official Code § 5–116.33 (c)(2)).
The criminal case is under investigation by the Criminal Investigations Division. The officer-involved shooting remains under investigation by the Internal Affairs Bureau’s Force Investigations Team, which investigates all law enforcement officer-involved shootings in the District of Columbia. The United States Attorney’s Office will independently review the facts and evidence in the case.

  • Suspects Sought in Northeast Coat Robbery

The Metropolitan Police Department seeks the community’s assistance in locating a group of suspects involved in a robbery in Northeast.
On Saturday, January 18, 2025, at approximately 1:45 p.m., First District officers responded to the 700 block of Second Street, Northeast, in reference to a robbery. The victim reported that a group of suspects approached him and assaulted him. The suspects took the victim’s coat and then fled the scene in a stolen white Hyundai Elantra, bearing VA tags UCZ6524, and a stolen black Hyundai Elantra, bearing NC tags KCZ7931.

  • MPD Seeking Suspects in an Attempted Robbery

The Metropolitan Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance to identify and locate suspects who attempted to rob a man in Southeast.
On Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at approximately 4:30 p.m., the victim was walking in the 1000 block of 1st Street, Southeast, when he was approached by multiple suspects. The suspects assaulted the victim and unsuccessfully attempted to take the victim’s coat. The suspects fled the scene.

  • MPD Arrests Suspect in Northeast Burglary

The Metropolitan Police Department announces the arrest of a suspect who burglarized a business in Northeast.
On August 24, 2024, at approximately 12:51 p.m., the suspect forcibly entered a business in the 500 block of H Street, Northeast. Once inside, the suspect took property then fled the scene.
On Friday, January 17, 2025, pursuant to a DC Superior Court arrest warrant, 34-year-old Devale Shelton, of Northeast, DC, was arrested and charged with Burglary Two.

  • MPD Seeks Suspect in Southeast Burglary

The Metropolitan Police Department requests the public’s assistance in locating a man who took property at gunpoint from a business in Southeast.
On January 20, 2025, at approximately 12:50 p.m., the suspect entered a business in the 500 block of 12th Street, Southeast, and approached an employee. The suspect pointed a gun at the employee and took a pair of silver mirrored sunglasses. The suspect fled the scene on a Capital Bikeshare bicycle.
