The weather hasn’t settled into any sort of understandable pattern lately, but summer rolls along steadily. DC has experienced torrential downpours, almost-tornadoes, an earthquake, power outages, and blistering heat so far. What’s next? Locusts? Maybe a freak blizzard. That almost sounds nice…
Fortunately there’s still plenty to do on the Hill this weekend to take your mind off the unpredictable weather. A whole lot of theatre options are descending on the neighborhood this weekend. Read on.
Thursday
Start your weekend at the Art House Open House from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. A project of City Gallery, Studio H, and John C. Formant Realty, the event opens 614 Elliott Place, NE, to the public to view the work of graffiti artist Tom Conlon and the “Pretty Little Things” exhibit from Sherill Anne Gross.
Head to the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) for the 7:00 p.m. performance of Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Mikado, presented by the GLBT Arts Consortium. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased in advance by calling the Workshop at (202) 547-6839. Additional performances are scheduled for Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
The Palace of Wonders hosts the DC Furies women’s rugby team for an arm-wrestling fundraiser. Entry is $10 and gets you drink specials… and maybe an ice pack or two after you compete.
The DC Black Theatre Festival brings performances of all types to venues throughout DC August 1 through August 8. Head to the Atlas Performing Arts Center where performances run throughout the weekend. Thursday night at 8:00 p.m. catch I Killed My Baby’s Daddy, a one-woman play by Desi Shelton. Tickets are $15. Additional performances are at 6:00 p.m. on Friday and 8:00 p.m. on Saturday.
Friday
Head back to the Atlas at 6:00 p.m. for Faces: Shades of Survival, which follows four women as they battle breast cancer. If you haven’t had your fill of theatre yet, stay for Harlem 9/11, a romantic comedy about two college students tasked to create a play about relationships. The performance starts at 8:00 p.m. Tickets for both shows are just $15 each.
Put your thinking cap on for Rock and Roll Spelling Buzz at the Rock & Roll Hotel. The competition starts at 8:00 p.m. and first place wins a $60 bar tab. Stay later for dancing at Villians night starting at 9:30 p.m.
Saturday
Though scheduled through the end of the month, Saturday night’s performance of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest at 8:00 p.m. at the H Street Playhouse is sure to be a memorable one. Stick around after the show for “The Drag Days of Summer” swing soiree. Complimentary beer, wine, and German food will be provided by Biergarten Haus. According to the theatre’s website, “Drag attire is most welcome!”
Put on your dancing shoes and head to Eastern Market Tango in the North Hall. The beginner class at 7:00 p.m. is $10, and the advanced class at 8:00 p.m. is also $10. This special Saturday class is geared towards first-timers and those dancing for a short period of time. Instruction is 8-9:15 p.m., followed by a 45 minute Practica.
