The To Do List

Did you ever think that temperatures in the high 80’s would be considered cool? Neither did I, but that was before the calendar flipped to 2010 — when we learned that 50 plus inches of snow and an exceptionally cold spring would lead into a summer of triple digit temperatures and oppressive humidity.

Why not enjoy this brief weather respite of low humidity and cooler temps by checking out what the Hill has to offer this weekend, both indoors and out.

Friday, July 30
If you are looking for musical entertainment in a lovely outdoor setting, stop by Marvelous Market Capitol Hill on your way home from the office and enjoy some jazz and classical guitar music on the patio from 5 pm to 7 pm. While you are there, sample some of the market’s favorite wines! The market offers a wine tasting the last Friday of every month through October.

If you’d like a sunset for your soundtrack, then make your way to the west steps of the Capitol and listen to the U.S. Army Band Downrange — A contemporary music ensemble from the U.S. Army Band. The performance begins at 8 pm.

Looking for a fun event for the whole family? Join Tennis on the Hill for Glow in the Dark Tennis Night! They’ll have fun tennis games (including glow in the dark tennis balls!), ice cream, popcorn and prizes. There is no charge for this event, but Tennis on the Hill asks that you please pre-register online.

Saturday, July 31
While I like to escape to a movie when it is hot outside, why not enjoy the outdoors and walk to the movies this Saturday. The theater is as close as the Atlas! At 5pm bring the kids to “Bugsy Malone,” featuring Scott Baio and Jodi Foster. And if kids or kid’s movie aren’t your thing, enjoy a free café concert in the Atlas lobby featuring Reverb at 7pm followed by “It Started in Naples,” featuring Clark Gable and Sophia Loren, at 8pm.

Sunday, August 1
While we take a break from the heat, THIH recommends taking the opportunity to fall in love with your yard all over again (you know you do every spring). Pick up some things for the grill and enjoy your backyard while you can! But, please, don’t forget the bug spray.

If  grilling isn’t your thing or that condo balcony doesn’t quite count as a yard, get out your bikes and take a lap around the Hill! What better time than now to start training for Hill and Go Seek in August.

All weekend and ongoing
CHAW’s Musical Theater Camp presents Thoroughly Modern Millie. Join the campers of Camp Spain as they showcase all they’ve learned this session in the visual and performing arts on Friday at 3:30 pm and 7 pm and Saturday at 1pm.

The Phillies are in town this weekend, so if you want to stop the flow of fans down the 95 corridor, be sure to check out a game this weekend. Tickets are still available for games on Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoon, but don’t bet on a Strasburg start.

The city is quiet and the weather is nice, so head on over to H St NE and check out the Pink Line Project’s Temporium, a pop up shop on the corner of 13th and H Streets NE. Then stop by the Argo for a sandwich and a beer. I hear good things about the PB&N (peanut butter and Nutella, yum).
