The To Do List: Week of October 22, 2020

And just like that, there is just a week and change until the end of October. A very happy birthday to Lost Capitol Hill himself, Robert Pohl. If you want to spend some time going down a fun history rabbit hole, make sure you check out Robert’s archives. If it weren’t for Robert, I wouldn’t be here today, so thanks for that, friend.

Okay. Besides reading history columns, what else is there to do in this nebulous ether we call a weekend?

You can start by forgetting your troubles with music by local artists. On Tuesday, I shared the hauntingly beautiful “Instant Night” by Beauty Pill. Today, listen to SHAED’s “No Other Way” and shake your tailfeather with their luminous, ethereal-yet-danceable music.

More history! Celebrate women’s rights shero and namesake of the beautiful The Lockwood with A Tour of their Own and, naturally, The Lockwood! On Friday, October 23, wish this feisty Scorpio #bossgirl a happy 190th on Instagram Live! Click here to connect. I will be celebrating with my own homage to the lady herself: a Belva’s Secret. The secret is that I think even though she was part of the Temperance movement, she probably liked to tipple now and then. (Not factual, but you never know.)

If you are a chamber music fan, or a fan of Marines playing instruments (don’t judge me), tune in to the Fall Chamber Series from the United States Marine Band. They have been live-streaming their performances on YouTube and the next one is on Wednesday, October 28. Click here to watch.

How about a concert for domra (!!) and piano? Check out this Groupmuse concert happening virtually tonight! Tickets.

Pair that new musical discovery with one of Atlas Brew Works newest beers: the delightfully named double IPA Giant Flaming Zombie Polar Bear. You can buy this 9.4%-packing, orange marmalade-tasting behemoth at both the Ivy City and Half Street breweries, along with many of their beloved mainstays. Order ahead and pick up later or get your beer delivered.

How about embracing this crazy technology and signing up for a Harvest Dinner Cooking Experience? The Food Photog has pulled together an incredible fallsy menu that promises to delight the senses. Follow along and learn a new technique– you know you’ve always wanted to learn to prepare some kickass duck. Tickets.

Speaking of food, have you signed up for Little Wild Things Farm Share yet? The next cycle starts October 28 and promises another weekly delight of greens. Check out the coupon on our masthead (please) or on the sidebar and bring some veggie joy into your life!

More food? How about trying out one of Beuchert’s Chef Andrew Markert’s homemade pasta kits this week? You can make black pepper rigatoni or bucatini, just like Andrew used to make– but it’s you, and it’s at home. Only $30 for feeling like a boss. Click here for the kits.

Need to do a little suburban spookiness? Field of Screams Maryland is still going strong. The 45-50 minute outdoor walk has chills and thrills and pretty light displays– perfect for a group of teenagers to do a little socially distant socialization. Click here for tickets and more info, and wear sturdy shoes.

If you’d rather keep your explorations limited to only one quadrant over, why not go to Southwest’s Artechouse? Their beautiful, soothing installation “Crystalline” is still going strong. Tickets.

Want to celebrate the Thirteen Nights of Halloween with Wundergarten in NoMa? The outdoor beer garden has been able to keep the true COVID fright out of their spookies– from trivia night to costume contests, they are keeping it fun by reservation only. You learn more here.

On the calendar: What are you doing Halloween weekend? Other than voting and checking out my super-duper SPOOKY HILL map, you need to check out The Witching Hour at Park Up DC. The show, from the Dreamscape Performance Company, will engage on two separate nights, October 30, and 31. October 30, the show starts at 7 p.m. and promises to be “an enchanted Halloween for all ages.” On Halloween proper, The Witching Hour happens at 11 p.m. and is “unedited.” What kinds of naughty mischief will be on display? Only one way to find out: Tickets.

To Do in November: Make sure you mark November 13-15 to BUY ALL THE POTTERY. Our friends at the Hill Center have moved their pottery show all virtual, all the weekend. Check out more information here.
