The Wildmans perform at the Hill Center Sunday afternoon

The end of the school year is next week for DCPS and parents of school age kids are currently experiencing what a friend so aptly called “the end of everything.” Final performances, playoffs, presentations, parties, proms, flying up, promotions and graduations. It is a lot.

If you are spared these mandatory markings of time, you can take advantage of some of these fun things:

Tonight eat at The Ugly Mug and support our beloved Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW)!

The DC chapter of the storytelling collective The Moth holds a story slam at The Miracle Theatre on Barracks Row. This month’s theme is “Chemistry” and you are invited to prepare a true 5-minute story related to that theme. Ten story tellers are randomly chosen and you are more than welcome to attend as a spectator. Tickets are $15 and the show begins at 7:30 p.m.

Friday is the kick off concert in the Capitol Riverfront weekly Free Friday Concert at Yards Park. This beloved tradition draws a diverse audience ready to enjoy some music by the water with lots of neighbors. You are welcome to bring a picnic or grab something at one of the many local restaurants. You can purchase drinks there. This is not a BYOB event. This week’s band is the funk and blues band Pebble to Pearl.

The Union Market Drive-In features that Nicolas Cage classic Con Air. I think it one of those so bad it is good films and Nick Cage is a weirdo but always fun to watch. Book your cars early or just walk on over for free. The movie will get started at about 8 p.m.

Gallery O/H hosts a free opening reception for Insider/Outsider a project by Click DC which focuses on storytelling and the influence of perspective as insider or outsider. The event begins at 6pm and there will be music by John Lewis and Marshall Keys.

Saturday is the monthly book sale at the Southeast Library. 10ish to 3ish. Do you have books to donate? (You live on the Hill so of course you do. Learn how here.

The Fields at RFK are finally opening! There will be a big celebration beginning at 10:30 am featuring special guest DC United’s Wayne Rooney. Mayor Bowser and Councilmember Allen (my boss) will be on hand to cut the ribbon. There will be two youth clinics provide by D.C. United’s Training Academy and the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy. Kids can sign up and participate on-site. DC Fray (remember Hungry Hungry Humans?) will also host kickball and flag football tournaments. There will be food trucks, family-friendly activities, live music, and RFK Untapped Beer Garden and more. Am I bitter that this opens after my years of schlepping all over the city for soccer and baseball. No. Because now I get to now be one of those morally and emotionally superior “Well in my day” people.

Sunday afternoon, Quicksilver Productions and the Hill Center present another concert in the outdoor American Roots Series. The Wildmans are an up and coming neo-traditional string band. The concert is at 4:30 and free for everyone! Register here.
