Zoo-wee, mama! The RFK deal surprised all of us and yet no one at the top of the week. Mayor Bowser and the Commanders took an victory lap with their splashy announcement that the team WAS. COMING. BACK. And frankly, it sounds like a done deal– that is, if at least seven councilmembers agree with her that this is an amazing piece of news.
So far, we assume that CMs Brooke Pinto, Anita Bonds and Kenyan McDuffie are all in, as they were present at the press conference. A surprising yes ––also present at the conference–– is Ward 7 CM, Wendell Felder, who seems to either be oblivious to or indifferent to the fact that a growing coalition of neighbors opposes a football stadium at that location. CMs Charles Allen and Brianne Nadeau have voiced strong opposition. CM Zachary Parker is not totally opposed to the idea but he wants the deal thoroughly scrutinized, as he believes is not favorable for DC. According to DC News Now, Chair Phil Mendelson is also a likely strong no and he was quick to point out that the council was not properly briefed on the deal (also covered by WUSA).
There have been no statements from CMs Matt Frumin (though WAMU’s Alex Koma did get his thoughts on the record last week), Janeese Lewis George, Christina Henderson or Robert White (and here, WTOP has a quote from him, expressing concern at the price tag), but we eagerly await what they have to say.

If you missed the meeting on April 29 at the Hill Center on the opposition to the stadium, WJLA has a recap.
