  • MPD Arrests Second Man in June 2023 Fatal Shooting

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch announce a second man has been arrested in connection to a shooting that killed a woman on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, in Northeast.
At approximately 10:08 pm, on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, First District officers responded to the 700 block of 19th Street, Northeast, for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located 54-year-old Tavonayna Glenn, of no fixed address, with gunshot wound injuries. She died at the scene.
On Wednesday, April 10, 2024, members of the First District Crime Suppression Team located and arrested 25-year-old James Outland, of no fixed address. He was charged with First Degree Murder while Armed pursuant to a DC Superior Court arrest warrant.
Previously, on December 3, 2023, pursuant to a DC Superior Court arrest warrant, a 25-year-old man was arrested and charged with First Degree Murder while Armed.

  • MPD Investigates Fatal Crash on South Capitol Street, Southeast

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit are investigating a traffic crash that resulted in the death of a man.
The preliminary investigation revealed that on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at 2:19 a.m., a sedan was traveling northbound on South Capitol Street, Southeast, near the Frederick Douglas Memorial Bridge. The driver failed to negotiate the curve and crashed into a drain ditch.
The driver was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced.
The decedent has been identified as 89-year-old John Alfonso Candela, of California, Maryland.

  • MPD Seeks Suspects in Burglary of Southeast Business

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s First District are searching for two suspects involved in a burglary of a business.
On Sunday, April 7, 2024, at 4:20 a.m., the suspects forcefully entered an establishment in the 1100 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, Southeast. The suspects took property and fled the scene.
The suspects were captured by a surveillance camera and can be seen in the photo at right:

  • MPD Makes an Arrest in a Southeast Stabbing

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s First District announced a man has been arrested for a stabbing that occurred in the 1400 block of L Street, Southeast.
On Sunday, April 7, 2024, at approximately 6:10 pm., the suspect and the victim were involved in an argument at the listed location. During the argument, the suspect brandished a knife and stabbed the victim. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect was apprehended by responding officers. The victim and suspect were known to each other.
56-year-old Gregory Lewis, of no fixed address, was arrested and charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Knife).

  • MPD Arrests Wanted Suspect in an Assault with a Dangerous Gun

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s First District have announced an arrest has been made in an Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Gun).
On Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at 8:45 p.m., First District officers responded to the 1500 block of Independence Avenue, Southeast, for the report of the sounds of gunshots. Upon arrival, officers located a vehicle damaged by gunfire. No injuries were reported. The detectives’ investigation revealed the suspect had discharged a handgun towards the victims prior to fleeing the scene.
On Thursday, April 11, 2024, 41-year-old Kevin Snead of Southeast, DC and Jumping Branch, WV, turned himself in to the First District Police Sub Station. He was arrested pursuant to a DC Superior Court arrest warrant and was charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Gun).

  • MPD Seeks Suspects Who Have Placed Card Skimming Devices in Establishments

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Financial and Cyber Crimes Unit seek the community’s assistance in identifying and locating suspects who used card skimming devices in Establishments in the District.
In the below offenses, a skimmer was located, inside of an establishment, by an employee. MPD responded to the locations and seized the card skimmer as evidence.

  • On Monday March 25, 2024, at approximately 11:27 a.m., in the 1200 block of 1st Street, Northeast. CCN: 24044826
  • On Monday, April 1, 2024, at approximately 11:13 a.m., in the 400 block of M Street, Southeast. CCN: 24048603
    MPD reminds the public to be mindful before making card transactions. Always:
  • Make sure the device isn’t able to be moved or budges when touched.
  • Compare your machine to the one next to you, if applicable.
  • Check the alignment of the card reader and the panel underneath it.
  • Look inside of the card reader before inserting your card.
  • If you see or suspect a card skimmer, please contact police immediately at 911.
  • Notify your bank immediately if you suspect you have been a victim of card skimming.
