To Do From Home, Weekend of February 4, 2021

The “weekend” is almost here, though after celebrating Groundhog Day on Tuesday and coming up on a year of pandemic isolation, every day has that un-magical sameness about it. Still, the day is bright and the birdies are chirping– has anyone else noticed the MOBS of robins at the parks?

Anyway, what can you do this week… end?

Why not give yourself flowers? While you’re at it, follow @flerusdc and treat your senses on the Insta.

For starters, the Super Bowl, that high holiday of Americanness, happens this Sunday. I have links for viewing, local snacking, ad-watching and more here. Support local and DO NOT have a large viewing party unless it’s outdoors.

It’s Black History Month, although every month we should strive to get educated about our collective history and understand each other. Watch this video from a recent chat by the DC History Center on building White men’s roads at the expense of Black neighborhoods.

Happy birthday to Rosa Parks! I remember learning this at Solid State Books, where a quote of Ms. Parks’ decorated the main hub. I miss you guys. (Follow this link from History.com to learn more about her)

Join the Folger’s Book Club today at 6:30 p.m. and chat about The Moor’s Account.

Valentine’s Day is coming up and I want all the singles in my readership not to be sad. If you want to get a piece of mail from a neighbor, sign up for Neighborhood Valentines ––a fun Secret Santa type of activity– here.

If you want to make your neighborhood valentine yourself, sign up for this lettering workshop online February 9. More details here. It might be sold out by the time this goes to uh, print, so email meg@shopmadeindc.com if you have questions.

If you have kiddos, consider signing up for the Department of Aging and Community Living’s adorable initiative “Cupid’s Kids.” Recruit your adorable children or take matters into your own (soon to be glittered) hands and spread love and cheer among our District seniors. You can learn more here and check out your toolkit here. Drop off your creation at selected DC Public Library sites by February 5.

Speaking of the DC Public Library, they have fun Black History Month-themed programs on their YouTube Channel. Learn more here.

Want to bond with a Stitch and Bitch club virtually? A local, uh, chapter, meets every Sunday and you can join by filling out the form here. (h/t to @clockoutdc for this gem)

Capitol Hill Books has a lot of delightful new gems that you should check out via their website. You know you can always make an appointment to shop, right? If you didn’t, now you know. (I am still working my way through a mystery grab bag and I just love everything they picked.)

Mr. Henry’s has not stopped doing their digital concerts that you can enjoy paired with Mr. Henry’ takeout. Click here to order and check out their Facebook page to tune in at 6 p.m.

Union Market is doing s’mores on Friday at Campfire by the Creamery. Get yourself a kit for $25 and enjoy the joys of camping in the heart of the city.

Dupont Underground is back and they will be doing installations in a safe, socially-distant way. The inaugural install is February 12 and you can secure your slot here.
