The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) is excited to announce its first open application for the CHAW Artist Residency Program for 2018. This program of CHAW seeks to expand CHAW’s engagement with professional artists working in the DMV. Our intention is to provide the community with an opportunity to interact with and observe the creative process of innovative and cutting edge artists. Our gallery space will, for six weeks each year, become an incubator space for the selected CHAW Resident Artist or Artist Team. During that time, the artist(s) will be transforming the space while interacting with our visitors and students.

This residency provides an opportunity for a dynamic individual artist or artist team to create a new body of work, evolve an existing body of work, or develop a project in a stimulating, supportive environment. The residency encourages interaction, dialogue and exploration both within the CHAW artist community and city-wide. The residency offers six weeks of time and space to an artist or team of artists each year to experiment and realize new work.  The right fit is someone who is interested in transforming the gallery space–and who is looking for a blank slate that is theirs, offering freedom, challenge, and openness to the artistic process, as well as a collaborative community element.

An artist or artist team who qualifies for the residency is working at the professional level in their fields. An abiding principle at CHAW is that applications for residency are judged on the quality of the artists’ work and professional promise.

Director of the CHAW Gallery and local artist, Ellen Cornett, says, “We want the community, artists and non-artists alike, to see and understand that artists don’t do a single thing – that they’re not stuck in a moment in time – they evolve, change, grow, and create new work. Often an artist won’t know how to make something work or if it’s going to be successful but to move forward, she must be willing to crash and burn and fail epically.” Cornett says that the CHAW Residency will be “a growth opportunity for the artist and also the community that gets to observe and interact with the artist.”

For the artist(s), this will be an opportunity to exhibit in a well-lit and clean gallery central to the DC area with substantial foot traffic and visibility. CHAW will provide promotion for the resident artist(s), their and the show, as well as a stipend for the artist(s).

The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) is located at 545 7th Street, SE, and since 1972, has provided arts education to thousands of children and adults in the Washington region, especially from the greater Capitol Hill area.

The 2018 Residency will run from March 1-April 14. The deadline for submissions is Midnight, September 6, 2017.

The complete prospectus and link to submission site are online and available at: http://www.chaw.org/artist-residency.
