Elections:

Meet the Candidates: Gail Fast ANC 6D01

We have offered to post brief statements from all of the ANC candidates running for seats on Capitol Hill and the surrounding neighborhoods that we cover here on The Hill is Home.  These statements are not endorsements and have been posted exactly as submitted by the candidates.

Photo - Gail FastI have lived in Southwest for over 25 years, attracted by the social diversity of Southwest and the overwhelming community engagement in matters directly affecting our way of life. Maybe some of you have seen me at ANC, SWNA and other community meetings? I have attended almost all of them, trying to stay abreast of the issues and working, as a member of the Near SE/SW Community Benefits Coordinating Council (CBCC), to protect Southwest’s unique character and qualities in the face of development.

If given the opportunity to serve as your ANC Commissioner, I will:

  • Work within the community to see that the vision, guiding principles and recommendations that were drafted as part of the Southwest Small Area Plan are implemented. As a member of the Southwest Small Area Plan (SAP) Advisory committee, I am very proud to have been a part of helping to shape it and will fight to keep the current zoning at the Shakespeare Theatre Company site, support building the Southwest Library at its current location, and using the build-first model for the Greenleaf parcel.
  • Put pressure on DDOT, the Office of Planning, Councilman Allen’s office and the Mayor to develop a comprehensive transportation plan to help move all the new residents and visitors coming to Southwest. With the first parcel of the Wharf project delivered in 2017 and groundbreaking on four new parcels in SMD01 to be delivered by 2018, we must make sure we are not facing gridlock all day every day.
  • Continue to advocate for increasing public open and green spaces; preserving our neighborhood’s iconic mid-century architecture with new buildings that respect and complement that aesthetic; and maintaining social diversity (in age, income, race, household types).

Why Vote For Me?

I believe I am the most well-rounded candidate, having participated in the numerous community meetings that have been held over the last five years as the Wharf and other redevelopment were vetted with the community; served as a member of the SW SAP Advisory Committee; served as president of my condominium association for 5-years; and worked with current ANC Commissioners on a number of projects that have positively impacted the residents of Southwest. I currently serve on the CBCC’s PUD Task Force to develop community benefits in redevelopment proposals. I have testified numerous times before the City Council and Zoning Commission on redevelopment matters in Southwest and am familiar with how the ANC (and the city) functions. My long residency; involvement in the community; respect for its unique character; and interest in protecting its unique qualities make me the best person to represent 6D SMD01.
