ANC:

Crime Updates From Your ANC Commissioners

Last Monday, ANC 6B10 commissioner Denise Krepp sent a crime update to her constituents. On Wednesday, ANC 6B04 commissioner Kristen Oldenburg sent an update for her email subscribers. We have compiled both emails into this post, and would like to thank our tireless Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners for all the hours they commit to making their single member districts better places to live. If you are a commissioner who shares his or her updates with your constituents and would like to share your updates with the whole neighborhood, email us at thehillishome@gmail.com. We would love to hear from you and THANK YOU! –MHC

From Denise Krepp:

Yesterday (Monday, October 3), MPD released helpful information on how to prevent burglaries. I’m sharing this information with you because there have been several burglaries in the past couple of weeks in ANC6B10.  See information below.

There were also two rapes in the Hilleast community in the past month. The most recent one occurred over the weekend and the individual who committed these assaults is in police custody. More information about these vile attacks can be found at https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/public-safety/police-arrest-drug-counselor-charged-with-sexually-assaulting-two-men-at-gunpoint-in-capitol-hill/2016/10/03/bed34fe6-8998-11e6-875e-2c1bfe943b66_story.html?utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitterfeed&wprss=rss_Copy%20of%20local-washdc-social and

The man who raped the 6B10 resident last October will be sentenced on October 21st. Last week, he pled guilty to a second burglary last year. Thank you to everyone who gave me information for the community impact statement.

Lastly, the Department of Justice continues to refuse to provide information regarding the prosecution of crimes occurring in Washington, DC. This refusal is disheartening given the increase in violent crime in our neighborhood. And it’s for that reason, that I believe that it’s time for a new US Attorney in DC. We need one that will work with DC residents, instead of against us.

Burglary Prevention Tips:

  • Lock your doors and windows. Many complainants report leaving doors or windows unlocked or being unsure if they were locked. If you have a sliding glass door make sure it is secured well. If you have an A/C unit in your window, take steps to secure it in place so it cannot be pushed in. This is a major vulnerability.
  • Look out for persons with no apparent legitimate business walking up to homes and testing doors to see if they are locked. They may carry backpacks which can be used to conceal property.
  • Electronic devices, cash, credit cards and car keys (used to subsequently take vehicles) are most often stolen. If possible, do not leave such items in plain view. Hide and/or secure such items.
  • Have good exterior lighting around the perimeter of your home.
  • Install an alarm system with sensors on all points of entry and motion detectors. MPD responds when an alarm is set off.
  • Install a private security camera system. These have become more affordable and there is a rebate program in place. These cameras are also helpful when monitoring front porches (package theft), vehicles in front of homes or in driveways (theft from auto) and yards, sheds and garages (theft of bicycles being common from these locations).

From Kristen Oldenburg:

Robberies.  That’s my word for September.  (so be careful walking around. Always)

Robbery reports rose in PSAs 107 & 108 and within ANC6B compared with August.  (PSA 106 was the exception with 4 in both months.)  PSA 107 had 12 robberies in September vs 9 in August.  In PSA 108, 6 vs 2. And within ANC 6B: 15 vs. 11, driving my SE Capitol Hill Violent Crimes chart count to 16 vs 13 in August. Despite a rise in robberies, year to date, the SE Capitol Hill VC average is 13 per month vs. 17 in 2015.  Lower averages are no comfort, I know, when you are the victim. (See Kristen’s spreadsheet hereSept 2016)

[See tab “CH VCs” in attached file.  VCs=homicides+robberies+assaults+sex abuse reports].

The rest of the crime report numbers are classified as Property Crimes.  The bulk of crime reports each month are property crimes [burglaries+thefts+thefts from auto+stolen autos+arson].  Thus, in September, there were 37 property crimes reported in PSA 106; in PSA 107 (90), in PSA 108 (44) and within ANC 6B (106).  Way more than half of these totals are thefts and thefts from auto.  In PSA 107, for instance, there were 57 thefts and 20 thefts from auto in September, or 75% of the PSA’s total crime reports (103).  Thefts include bicycles from back yards and packages off porches.

Did you know that for these types of crimes for which the perpetrator is long gone, you can file a report online?  Go to http://mpdc.dc.gov/service/file-police-report-online

On the attached file (see it here: Sept 2016)  are all the usual individual violent and property report numbers by the three PSAs and ANC 6B, along with details of individual reports.  However, an important category not discussed here and missing from my file is Arrests. These numbers are harder for me to provide.  The MPD 1D Yahoo Group has daily lists of arrests, as well as crime reports, but the arrests are not easily tallied as a counter point to #s of reported crimes. If you visit the 1D yahoo group regularly, you will find more complete details on some reported crimes. On October 3rd, MPD Officer Brian Stacks provided tips on how to prevent becoming a victim of a burglary.  (See above) And, about once a month, MPD posts a report on arrests made in conjunction with drug busts and gun recoveries.
