Pow Pow Grand Opening Saturday, May 7

powpow_1060H Street’s newest eatery, Pow Pow, opens its doors tomorrow at 1253 H Street NE! We got to stop by this week for a peek inside their new digs and to get a taste of some of their offerings. Let’s just say that when someone offers you an egg roll “the size of your arm,” you pull up a seat. That was a tasty treat that is sure to become a favorite of the late-night crowd.

POW-POW is a neighborhood styled fast casual restaurant located in the heart of the popular H Street, North East corridor of Washington, DC.

Adapting Chinese, Japanese and Korean techniques through corporate American food models, POW-POW creates its version of “New Asian” cuisine. Serving farm fresh salads, hearty bowls and egg rolls the size of your arm.  Providing a selection of vegetarian and vegan food options, POW POW also tops its menu with a gluten-free fried chicken. Using the highest-quality natural ingredients from local farms when available, POW POW serves its unique version of creative, fun and healthy food in a culture rich environment.

Located directly in front of H streets newest trolley car stop at 13th & H streets, North East, POW POW incorporates its restaurant’s design resembling a modern Tokyo metro stop with Asian street art murals painted over classic DC Punk rock promotional posters. Guests sit under neon lights while POW POW’s chef creates food out of its exposed kitchen.

POW-POW is the brainchild of local musician/restaurateur, Shaun Sharkey and Lavagna’s second year in a row, DC’s Italian Restaurant of the year owner, Stephen Cheung. While enlisting Sticky Rice creator/owner, John Yamashita and other area chefs to create the menu and brand.

Pow Pow will initially just serve dinner as they get everything running smoothly. They will then expand to lunch service. Full hours will even include late night (3am!) food service on Friday and Saturday nights.

You know Stephen Cheung from Lavagna and you may know Shaun Sharkey from his music background. I was most excited to hear that not only is he from the area, but his grandparents owned businesses on H Street before the riots. Local roots are the best!
