Labor Day weekend is upon us. Time to call it a day on Summer 2015. It was a good one. Pretty great weather, though the Nats have proved disappointing…

If you too are not going to the Hamptons this weekend then you might try some of these funnish things…

Tonight head to the National Herb Garden for Cocktails in the Garden, an evening of summer blooms, open meadows, and views of the National Capitol Columns. Try a specially-created cocktail, then explore the garden on a hands-on tour with the Arboretum’s staff. After the tour check out the mixology demonstrations, more cocktail samples, and Asian-inspired finger food. Drinks created by Chantal Tseng of Mockingbird Hill and Tabard Inn. Light fare provided by Chef Thomas Park from Founding Farmers Restaurant. Tickets are $59 ($47 FONA) Includes entry, food, drinks, tour, and demonstrations. Entrance at R Street gate only; use 2400 R Street NE for GPS. R Street gate opens at 5:30 pm. Registration required. Friday night at Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) is another Friday ARTnights this time is Drop-In Figure Drawing. New students should bring an 18×24 newsprint pad, an 18×24 Strathmore Drawing pad, kneaded eraser and extra soft vine charcoal to the first class.  The class is facilitated by master engraver and artist Will Fleishell. The Dave Matthews cover band Crowded Streets takes the stage for the Friday Night concert series at Yards Park from 6:30 to 8:30. (I love writing this one every year. It makes me feel one thousand years old.)

Saturday morning bring the kids to the Folger Shakespeare Library from 10am-12pm for Shake up Your Saturdays, an ongoing program for kids 5-14 for learning and fun with the Bard and his language. This Saturday’s theme is School for Players where kids can find out what it took to be an actor during Shakespeare’s time. 10:00-11:00 am for ages 5-9 and 11:00-12:00 pm for kids 10-14. Register your tiny Cumberbatch here. Rorschach Theatre is back at it at the Atlas. This weekend the company’s ‘attest offering is in Pay What You Can previews of TRUTH & BEAUTY BOMBS: A Softer World. Created and directed by Jenny McConnell Frederickthe show is a story about a photographer who as he goes blind,e sets out to capture as much of the world as he can. Through his lens he discovers laundromats that eat hope, cameras that capture souls and a love that just won’t die. The show opens September 13th and runs through October 4th.
