Farmers Market Opens Today at Watkins Elementary School

If you’ve walked by Watkins Elementary you may have seen the brilliant pink stalks of chard, the squash blossoms or the copious amounts of basil growing in the school’s gardens. It’s all grown by students study math, science, and social studies by getting their hands dirty.

For those of us who start pining for a dinner of fresh vegetables as we eye the fruits of their labor, there’s a new farmers market, sourced by the Tuscarora Organic Farmers Cooperative, a group of over 40 farms only 2.5 hours from DC. Each Wednesday from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. you can sample their wares at the intersection of 13th and E Streets, SE.

The market is a partnership with FoodPrints, the garden and cooking program at Watkins. Last fall Watkins teachers and parents raised money to build a teaching kitchen for the students to add cooking to their repertoire.  Click here to see a cookbook FoodPrints has published with classroom recipes. Many of the ingredients will be showcased at the new market.
