After last week’s little touch of Mercurian temperatures these upper 80 degree days are feeling almost nippy. If you spent last weekend like my husband, hunkered down in the basement hugging the AC unit then maybe you can get out a bit this weekend. Let’s see what we have happening here.
Tonight you can cheer on Capitol Hill as our Little League All Stars take on the Northwest Little League for bragging rights to the DC championship. The 11/12 year olds play at 5:30 and the 9 and 10s at 7. If the little ones win tonight they move on to the Maryland tournament. Both games take place at nearby Fort Lincoln Rec Center. Come out and cheer for the Hill!
Tonight at 8pm the Atlas is showing the original John Waters’ film Hairspray. The film that launched the career of Ricki Lake also starred Sony Bono, Debbie Harry, Jerry Stiller and of course the Baltimore drag legend Divine. Tickets are $5, food and drinks are available at the cafe to bring in to the film. I remember watching this when it came out in 1988. It was my introduction to Waters’ world. I remember feeling so edgy and artsy and sophisticated.
Friday night The Capital City Players open The Mercy Seat at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop. The show is a part of the Fringe Festival. The play is one of the first major theatrical responses to the September 11th attacks. A commercial and critical success during its New York run, “The Mercy Seat” focuses on one man’s attempt to turn tragedy into opportunity by fleeing the country with his mistress, leaving his children and wife to believe he died a hero. Reservations can be made online here: http://capitalcityplayersdc.org/reservations.htm or atwww.capfringe.org. The show runs through July 28.
KUNG FU FRIDAY repeats tonight at the Atlas with a double feature of Kung Fu Hustle and The Last Dragon. The films explore a lighter side of the genre but still showcase stellar fighting scenes. Kung Fu Hustle begins at 7pm and the first 15 people in the door get FREE tater tots from Sticky Rice. Sushi and Asian beers are also available. The Last Dragon is at 9:30. Tickets are $5 for one films and $8 for both.
Saturday bring the kids to the Atlas for free family films at 10am and 4pm. This week’s is Matilda based upon the book by Roald Dahl. Another classic Dahl story about a lovely little girl with terrible parents, in this case played by real-life couple Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman. Dahl’s work often teaches kids that their parents aren’t all that bad and really they could be so, so much worse.
Saturday night check out Diabolical Delights at the Red Palace. An evening of burlesque, magic and sideshow. This sexy magic and sexy sideshow routines to go along with the sexy burlesque. International Queen of Burlesque Angie Pontani headlines the evening. $15 tickets.
