Hey neighbors! Here are a few stories to catch you up on what’s been going on around the Hill and DC.
First off, the Southeast Library branch reopened today! If you haven’t been, make a point of stopping by while it still has that glorious New Library smell. The renovation doubled the size of the space, added tons of natural light and also expanded the size of the Children’s area dramatically. You can find the children’s area in the newly expanded basement, which has so much lovely natural light you truly won’t believe it’s a basement. Be on the lookout for a ribbon-cutting Instagram reel later today and a special tidbit from my blogging buddy and president of Friends of Southeast Library, Robert Pohl.

The storm that hit our area last Thursday night was quite the doozy, and it downed trees around our area (WJLA video). Thank you to neighbors who shared photos and video of the fallen trees. Gotta say, it was impressive how quickly DDOT cleared even the worst damage, such as the very large tree that blocked part of Maryland Avenue at 8th Street NE or the tree that fell onto the unit block of 3rd Street NE.
A National Guardsman pulled a gun on a fellow Guard as they argued over… regulation haircuts? Yes, and he was charged with felony assault (obviously). As if the world’s longest and saddest 8th grade field trip weren’t pathetic enough already, we now have petty fights escalating on our city streets from the people who are supposedly protecting us from alllll this crime. Theater Week has been announced and will start September 24. Naturally, our local theaters, such as the Folger, Mosaic Theater inside the Atlas and Arena Stage are participating. Check out the lineup at the Theatre Washington website.

The first day of school may have come and gone, but it was so refreshing to see Trinidad parents standing up for their community and protesting the presence of the National Guard at their kids’ school. FOX-5
