To Do

Bruce Jenner sporting short-shorts in Can’t Stop the Music tonight at the Atlas

That mid-week holiday has me totally out of sorts. Tuesday felt like a Friday, yesterday felt a bit like a Sunday and here we are with the second Monday of the week. Harrumph. At least the weekend is almost here. How should we spend it?

Tonight the Atlas starts their Summer Film Series. Thursday nights at 8 are Gay 101, films that are not necessarily gay-themed but resonate with the gay community. We considered the tagline “Not just for Gays anymore!” the first year we did this series. First up the so-bad-it’s good, Can’t Stop the Music, a faux biopic of The Village People starring a young Steve Gutenberg on roller skates and Bruce Jenner is his post-Olympic heyday. This film was so terrible it was the inspiration for the Razzie awards but like a train wreck you can’t avert your eyes. The movies are shown in the large black box theatre so snacks and cocktails are available at the cafe.

Friday night the Corner Store is hosting Doug and Telisha Williams, their most recent album Ghost of the Knoxville Girl spent 15 weeks on the American Music Association’s Top 40 charts and was one the associations top ten albums of the year. Originally from Martinsville, VA, their music reflects the voices of the lives and struggles of the life in a small town in the shadows of the Blue Ridge. Show starts at 8pm.

Atlas is hosting Kung Fu Friday Double features every Friday night in July. A double bill of Kung Fu classics that is sure to please every fan of the genre and perhaps win some new ones. Sushi from Sticky Rice will be available to enjoy with the films and the first 15 patrons in the door get a free carton of their famous tater tots. Asian beers will be available as well. Test your Shaolin skills each week with challenges such as tossing some throwing stars or chopping though boards.

Saturday is Family day and this summer the films are all based the work of author Roald Dahl. So even though you and the kids are sitting watching a movie, there is a literary justification. First up is the classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory, the creepy Gene Wilder version, not the creepy Johnny Depp one. The movies are shown at 10am and 4pm and are FREE.

Saturday evening head to Gallery O/H for their music n the courtyard series. This week is is hosting Ban Caribe who plays Afro-beat with a Latin twist. Tickets are $10 which includes the price of one drink.

Jen DeMayo is director of Community at the Atlas.
