The Habits of Runners

When I sat down to right this post I immediately thought of an episode of “Sex and the City,” in which Miranda gets a not so gentle nudge into the 8-minute mile group after an awkward encounter with Marathon Man. It was the first time I learned that one could train with others for a race, though when the show first aired I was about ten years away from running my first 5k.

As I train for my first half marathon in March, I am learning that I prefer to do my long runs alone on Sunday morning, while the H Street Runners — whom I have been following on Facebook, but never on runs — have me thinking that maybe running is best done with friends.

How do you run? Alone? With a partner? With a child in a stroller? In a group? Tell us by taking the poll below, and then be sure to pop into the comments section and tell me why I should consider running with a partner or even why I’m smart to stick to the trails alone.

As a new runner I can’t imagine running with someone. Maybe it would push me to go longer or faster but I feel like I would just get discouraged

Mornings are best for me. I need to know someone is waiting or I won’t get out of bed. I’m looking for someone who lives on The Hill to go on some easy runs in the mornings . I live in NE near 6th & F near Stanton Park. I’m a 54 year old male. I like to go maybe 3 or 4 miles and run an 8 or 8.5 minute mile pace. Ideally a start time between 6:30 and 7. Let me know if amyone is interested

I’ve started running my long runs with a partner, but do all of my shorter during-the-week type runs on my own. Typically early morning around the Mall.

I am with tiger, I just started running about a month ago and am learning to pace myself. The gains in only a month have been great, but I know if I went running with someone that was faster than me, I would tired myself out too quickly and get discouraged.
