Monday Morning Circle Time

Good morning! So last week when all the girls on Facebook were proclaiming the return of tights and boots I did not join in. Too early to herald the return of fall; and sure enough we’ve been living in an above-ground swamp all weekend. The murk began to lighten Sunday evening but I really feel like I was just damp all weekend long. Blech.

So festival month on the Hill continued with Barracks Row’s annual fête. It was a quiet and subdued affair in comparison to H Street’s extravaganza the week before but still retained its neighborhood charm and family-friendly nature.

There was no Redskins game but the Nats played their final home games. Anyone make it down to the park?

Tell me, what did you do this weekend?

Liz was in Connecticut at a  big, bouncy, joyous family wedding and visiting her old dorm/sorority/fraternity house thing, which smelled the same of beer, cigarettes, champagne, pizza, leather, and old goat, with a touch of Ralph Lauren Polo; and where an underclassman frantically fluffed out his bedspread in his cluttered little room while I waited at a friend’s old door– proving I look like a parent more than anyone who could possibly fit in on a campus ever again.  All this while her sweet cat stayed behind and told tales to crickets and grasshoppers of languorous DC nights alone without sounds of Star Wars Wii; blocks falling down; all kinds of household cacophony; wind-up toys; remote control cars; running feet; light sabers; falling dishes;  and the dreaded vacuum; but was treated to regular visits from a favorite neighborhood lady.

Jon: Saturday we spent time at the Barracks Row Festival. Sunday I spent in Alexandria painting inside my brother & sister-in-law’s new home.  We also spent the weekend finding things to do with the bumper crop of basil we had this summer.  Who  knew basil simple syrup was so versatile?

Maria: Saturday afternoon was spent rapturously basking in the gorgeous loveliness that still is Brad Pitt… and watching “Moneyball,” which was really great.  Sunday was for grocery shopping; getting stuck in random traffic; harvesting basil (need recipe, Jon); discovering that Frager’s does NOT close at 5:55 pm on Sundays (grr); and treating the kiddos to some Pitango before dinner.  After all, life is uncertain.

Kyra: Celebrated her daughter’s impending third birthday at Nationals Park with our favorite Hill friends and Penn State family.  We ended a fun Saturday at Alberto’s, where we never go wrong with a carafe of chianti.  Sunday was spent running errands at Eastern Market, visiting lack luster open houses, watching the Nat’s last game at the park and cleaning. Oh the cleaning.

Jen: Friday night was spent at home with homemade pizza resting up for Saturday. I spent the majority of that day at the Barracks Row fest cheerleading for Atlas and CHAMPS. I managed to catch some soccer and baseball on either end of the day. Sunday we checked out the Book Festival on the Mall but quickly realized they didn’t have a lot going on for the tweens; however, they each were determined to win a pony from the Wells Fargo people.  It took the better part of an hour but they triumphed. Said ponies will never, ever be touched again. Ended the day with Bikram and Smitten Kitchen tomato soup.
