Monday Morning Circle Time

So there was snow. A bit. Not enough to satisfy those of use who feel we were dis-served by OldMan Winter this year, but really not enough to really mess with your weekend plans. There was a nip for sure but you couldn’t deny that it still felt like Spring.

If you’re a driver you may have been stranded on the Hill Saturday morning as some really disciplined people decided to start their day by running 26.2 miles. Did any of you dear readers or bloggers?

Jon: Spent another weekend with his family in the suburbs of New York City, this time taking in the aquarium in Norwalk, Connecticut as well as taking in large amounts of bagels, Italian bread, and other baked goods.

Nichole: Friday I met friends at the Ugly Mug for beer and basketball, followed by an assortment of adult beverages and origami at fellow-THIHer Maria’s house. Saturday was bliss: caught up on my DVR only leaving the house for the 105 degree yoga studio (perfect for such a cold day) and Harris Teeter sushi. Sunday I cleaned and started the process of rearranging my living room and guest room/office and then headed off to yoga again before returning home to my couch (and my work in progress of furniture arranging – there is a desk in the middle of my living room right now).

Robert: Spent Saturday morning showing DC to a friend from out of town, then the rest of the day setting up for Maury’s fundraiser at the Market. Didn’t get home until midnight, which meant I spent Sunday recovering.

Maria: Friday I hosted an impromptu session of Happy Hour Origami; Saturday, relaxed, made tacos, and relaxed some more; and Sunday, took a walk to the cherry blossoms and enjoyed the zen.

Kyra: What makes a couple obsessed with remodeling their home take a break? Baseball season! We spent our last baseball-free weekend–the season starts on Thursday–preparing our first floor for new hardwood floors.

Lauren: Saturday we “donated” more of our money to Lowe’s and the Home Depot. In some sad way, I do think we’ll miss it when we’re finally done working on the house. Sunday we made pancakes with my new Martha Stewart batter dispenser (thumbs up!) and went to dinner in Georgetown.

Jen: Hosted a neighbor’s son for a sleepover Friday night. All seemed fine as I went to sleep but learned the next day that my ten year old had decided to fulfill his LIFELONG AMBITION of staying up ALL night. Needless to say Saturday was hairy for us but we did all go to the tree planting at Sherwood Rec. What a fun event! We hosted friends for dinner Saturday night and Sunday I lingered over tea with a friend while the kids played quietly. Lovely.

I had the best DMV experience this past Saturday. I needed to convert my license and registration from VA to DC, and was expecting long waits and multiple problems. Was not expecting to get everything done and be out within the hour! When I tried to do the same thing in Virginia it took 2 months (of me going once or twice a week and waiting at least 2 hours each trip), through no fault of my own. And the service was so much better here– no nasty employees screaming at the customers. Major props to DC for having such a well-run DMV!

Yes, I got boxed in. I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m sick and tired of groups who MUST run only in the nation’s capital. Why not in the woods, up and down a mountain, along a highway? And the cost to taxpayers could be seen even in alleys with cops standing around like they’d rather be in any place but there! This has gotten out of hand. Every group in the WORLD feels it will not be seen as “important running” if it doesn’t disrupt the lives of EVERYONE who lives in the DC metro area. Go run somewhere else!

@so rudea there’s no cost to taxpayers for all those police because MPD charges the cost of several souped-up SUVs to staff those street closings. This is likely the final running of the Capitol Hill Classic 10k in May due to the untenable cost to the Capitol Hill Cluster School PTA to pay the police. In past years, 32 to be exact, the police fees have been refunded to the PTA through a city community fund. Mayor Gray has ended that practice and so, our 3 campus public school – serving more than 1500 children — will have to end it’s most important fundraiser. And I will certainly lose all motivation to keep running (kidding, sort of).
