CHAMPS — the Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce — just launched a Buy Local campaign, and the benefits are pretty incredible. Just $50 gets you a BUY LOCAL membership card, which provides you with great discounts at all sorts of local businesses.
Highlights include 20% off at The Argonaut, 10% off at Granville Moore’s, 15% off purchases of 12 bottles or more at Schneider’s, and even discounts on plumbing services and personal training.
At first glance I like this, a lot. I will update whether I put my $ where my mouth is.
I hope we try to keep a mix of food/entertainment and other retail going. I get the economincs that drive what businesses thrive and which don’t but I just want to see a mix. Come on down Penn, plenty of storefronts. Also, I hope this initiative opens my eyes to services I did not know existed.
PS–Bikeshare still rules.
Is the membership good forever? I’m not sure I patronize the participating businesses enough for the card to be worth it, but I like the concept.
However, this one from Bikram Yoga made me laugh:
“Free Water Wednesdays! Show your membership card on Wednesdays; receive free water!”
@Claire – my card says that it is valid through December 2011, so I guess that means that you do have to buy a new one every year (although any cards bought now will be good for the remainder of 2010 as well as all of 2011)
the free month of DC Access internet will pay for 60% of my card! WIN!!!
