I think it’s pretty safe to say that most of us like the three-day weekend. It makes your Sunday so much more of what a Sunday yearns to be what with the putting off of chores and the naughty staying up late.
Of course Columbus Day is not, shall we say, universally celebrated. You may note my Italian last name above but to be honest I’ve always thought the Italian-American obsession with the brave yet terrible navigator seemed to be trying a bit too hard to find a hero. Why can’t we be happy about Amerigo Vespucci?? I mean the whole country is named after him.
Anyway. I found yesterday’s Facebook meme suggesting that we mark the holiday by inviting ourselves into a strangers house and then announcing you live there now kind of funny. But of course we can’t undo 400 years of history so we mostly just say thanks for the extra day of early fall freedom.
How did THIH mark or not mark this extra-long weekend?
Jon: Spent the weekend cleaning the house, doing yard work, and running errands in preparation for the parents visit this coming week. We managed to take a couple long walks with the dog in the afternoons to enjoy the weather, though, and had some great meals at home.
David: Spent Friday night in Georgetown on stage with Sick Feed. Spent most of Saturday on the Hill, having brunch at Montmartre, checking out the Schneider’s warehouse sale, and enjoying a burger and several beers at Lola’s for dinner. Visited Eastern Market and peregrine on Sunday, and headed out to Annandale on Sunday night for some Korean barbeque.
Claudia: Friday night I went to PX in Old Town with some friends, then had a delicious dinner at Bastille. Saturday was spent running errands all day, and Sunday was spent at the Skin’s game. I was one of the lucky few who still had work on Monday, sitting in a windowless cubicle on a beautiful 80 degree day.
Kyra: I spent the better part of my weekend at my two favorite places: Lincoln Park and Eastern Market. There is nothing better than a turn down the slide, a sandwich from Prego, and the sound of my daughter yelling excitedly “the market” as we approach the corner of 7th St. and North Carolina Ave.
Nichole: Was dogsitting for friends this weekend, so in addition to my own, I had 2 more pups in the house. Spent Friday night going on a Walking Shtick scandal tour around the Hill, and finished up at Tortilla Coast for dinner and margaritas, where we were joined by a THIHer who never quite caught up with the tour. Saturday, I cleaned and cleaned… and cleaned… and cleaned. Sunday was more of the same mostly, but with a nap and a visit from a friend thrown in. Monday I actually worked most of the day, but happily was able to do so from my couch until it was time to head to SOVA for game night!
Tim: Had a great opening weekend for Walking Shtick. Then took advantage of the three day weekend by breaking in my new backpack. Awesome camping trip until a gnat flew into my eye and had to hike out squinting. The doctor at Washington County Hospital had the good grace to not laugh at me to my face. Am now typing this one eyed.
Jen: Spent the weekend in beautiful Chapel Hill, NC for my sister’s wedding. Sniff. Loved every minute of spending time with my, mostly, incredible family including some cousins from LA we haven’t seen in 20 years. The whole event was just perfect and I wish it hadn’t gone by so quickly. If you will allow me a moment of sheer bragging, I made her wedding cake. It was the first time I ever attempted anything so insane and there were MANY moments where I thought it would just end in disaster. But it didn’t and if I do say so, it was awfully cute and damn tasty. Here it is.
Now I know why those things are so expensive…

Granted there are likely problems with my sample size, but probably 80% people with kids on the Hill went to Cox Farms in Centerville yesterday to romp in the hay, go down slides and get sick on free apple cider. Seems like we could charter a bus next Columbus Day and spare most of us the horror of driving on I-66 on a holiday.
