The To-Do List

Survive the high humidity and brutal heat of a DC summer and the unpredictable nature of a DC winter and residents are rewarded with two months of great weather: April and October.  Temperatures are crisper, the humidity is lower, and it’s mostly a pleasure to be outside.  Why not spend some time outside this weekend?  There are some unique and exciting things happening on or close to the Hill this weekend.

A short jaunt from the Hill will bring you to Zestfest, a three-week festival of arts and entertainment in the NoMa (North of Massachusetts Avenue) district.  Zestfest starts on Thursday and runs through October 23.  A free salsa dance class and performance is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at the New York Avenue Metro Plaza.  Check out the Zestfest website for the full schedule of events.

Enjoy some of the fall weather on a walking tour of Capitol Hill.  The newly-formed Walking Shtick Tours is offering tours this weekend for $10 to THIH readers (just mention the website).  Tours start at the Eastern Market metro plaza at 7:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

For a new twist on an old play, check out Taffety Punk’s Riot Grrrl Julius Caesar.  The all-female cast puts a rocking spin on one of Shakespeare’s historical and usually all-male plays.  Performances can be found at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 p.m and Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.  Tickets are just $10.

Continuing the streak of fall festivals in DC, this Saturday you can attend the first annual Riverfront Fest in the space adjacent to The Yards Park in Southeast.  From 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. enjoy live performances, artists, vendors, and children’s games.  The schedule of events and list of performers is available at http://www.riverfrontfest.com/.

Celebrate the 61st anniversary of Schneider’s Warehouse Sale this Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  While Schneider’s is a Capitol Hill institution, you have to travel a little bit farther to enjoy the festivities—taste over 100 wines, grab lunch, meet the importers, and take advantage of great sale prices.  The warehouse is located at 1840 Fenwick St. NE.

Cap off your Saturday at the Park Café, where from 8:00 p.m. on the band Side Dish will be performing amplified acoustic covers and original work.  There’s no cover charge, and domestic microbrews are just $4.

I just wanted to pass along that the Main Reading Room at the Library of Congress is having an Open House on Columbus Day Holiday on Monday, October 11, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
