Monday Morning Circle Time

Tiny cakes baked by Sarah R.

What a gorgeous weekend! Really, this one would have made an excellent three-dayer don’t you think? The strolling, the colors and the delicious air..sigh. Good to know we get another in just 5 days…

Of course next weekend is a big one.  So with the anticipation of spookiness, sweets and the parties to come it was nice to take this one easy.

Jon: Enjoyed Saturday and the nice weather by spending time on the grounds of Washington National Cathedral, then had a Dora the Explorer movie party for my daughter and two toddler friends that evening. Sadly I spent Sunday at work, but I did manage to take a nice walk along the riverfront in Georgetown.

Kyra: This weekend my loving husband bought me the Dan Kessler painting that I have been coveting since I first saw it at the market over five years ago. Everything else this weekend pales in comparison.

Maria: I traveled to Florida.  It’s 82 degrees right now.  The end.

Claudia: I had a very low key weekend, which was more than welcome after after a busy work weekend.  Along with house chores and errands, I spent some time wandering around Eastern Market, had a great dinner at Masa 14, and watched the Skins pull in another win.

Liz: Helped co-host the Literary Feast, a mad Men slash The Feminine Mystique cocktail party and hoped all had a good time, but still has Aquanet in her hair and is finding toothpicks in odd places. Sunday we lent to the Shenandoah, where I got carsick on the winding turns, just like when I was a kid.

Robert: Spent the weekend giving tours and showing my parents around the Hill and beyond.

Sharee: Started my birthday Saturday morning at the Maury Fall Festival playing dunk the ANC candidate.  Fortunately the water in the dunk tank was really warm.  We followed up with lunch at Liberty Tree (yum) and an amazing dinner at the Literary Feast.  Sunday called for brunch at Montmartre, an afternoon strolling Eastern Market, the Walking Schtick scandal tour and an amazing post-birthday dinner by my chef husband whipped up from goodies from the EM vendors.

Nichole: On Friday, I ran around the Hill dropping off Buy Local packages, then had a nightcap on the patio with my neighbors in the building. Saturday started early at the polls at Hine, followed by a twirl around Eastern Market, a stop at Metro Mutts, a visit with friends and then the afternoon was spent again with the building neighbors on the patio, where we spent the day gathered around the smoker, drinking beer and bourbon and smoking ribs and brisket. Sunday I held my breath watching the Ravens squeak out a win at Trusty’s. The only downside to the weekend is that my house still looks like hoarders, and I tripped and fell and broke several $300 antique dishes, and am now bruised from head to toe. (The dishes are really ugly and I inherited them from my Grandmother, so I can’t say I’m too broken up about it, if you will.)

Jen: Enjoyed my first Literary Feast on Saturday evening. We chatted with local celebs such as  the Librarian of the Folger and the owner of Hill’s Kitchen while discussing Jonathan Safran-Froer’s Eating Animals and eating animal free cuisine. We then crashed the Alice in Wonderland dinner hosted by my friend who made a gajillion tiny perfect desserts. The rest of the weekend was spend researching gluten-free cooking and eating since we learned Friday afternoon my 10 year old has celiac. So yes that was me, the crazy lady crying in the cracker aisle at the new Yes! Market across the River.

Jen, a friend of mine from college is a Natural Chef who specializes in gluten-free cooking-she graduated from the Natural Gourmet Institute in New York a few years ago. She is especially sensitive to the needs of kids-she was an education major in college, and she is the oldest of five kids and a babysitter extraordinaire. She blogs about her new cupcake business and cooking experiences at aisforashleyrebecca.blogspot.com, but if you wanted to talk to her directly about dealing with celiac I’m sure she would be more than happy to share what she knows.
