We have offered to post brief statements from all of the ANC candidates running for seats on Capitol Hill and the surrounding neighborhoods that we cover here on The Hill is Home. These statements are not endorsements and have been posted exactly as submitted by the candidates.
Mary Wright ANC 6B02
As a long-term Capitol Hill resident, I have the experience and commitment to work for you as your ANC (Advisory Neighborhood Commission) member. Since I was elected in 2000, I’ve worked hard to represent your interests during an exciting time to live on Capitol Hill.
My most important responsibility is to listen and respond to issues that are important to you. Whether it’s a garbage company picking up trash too early in the morning, addressing concerns about crime and safety or balancing our small neighborhood values with development, I’ve worked to keep our neighborhood vibrant, clean and safe.
On your behalf I have:
- Chaired for the ABC (Alcohol, Beverage, and Control) Committee; and testified before city agencies on ABC license cases and protests
- Defended neighbors when “peace, order, and quiet” issues were compromised with liquor license establishments
- Advocated and represented your needs and concerns to city agencies
- Made sure your voice was heard on the Eastern Market “7th Streetscape Project”; new traffic lights, brick paving and landscaping which enhanced your neighborhood
- Fought for signage and traffic lights by Eastern Market as well as traffic calming measures in the neighborhood
- Successfully negotiated conflicts between neighbors and business establishments
- Led regular park and alley “clean ups”
- Obtained neighborhood improvements grants for Turtle Park
- Provided leadership on public safety and quality of life issues
There are vital decisions that will be made which will shape our neighborhood. If reelected, I would work with you to address the issues that affect all of us, such as the future vision of Eastern Market, the Hine Jr. High parcel, the Eastern Market Metro plaza and the direction of Barracks Row. Together, we must move forward with consensus-building and cooperation between our business corridors and neighborhood.
I know the power of strong community spirit. I want to further the vitality, safety and that spirit of our neighborhood. I respectfully ask for your vote and would be honored to continue serving as your ANC Commissioner.
Mary Wright
ANC Commissioner 6B-02

Mary has worked effectively and hard for the community. She will continue to strive for community consensus, truth and recognition that no one group “owns the Eastern Market area” Users of Turtle Park and that includes all of us who walk past should recognize the importance of Mary’s support for the park. I only hope that the defacement and disappearance of Mary’s signs will be denounced by her opponents.
